This is a bizarre list.

1. what about EFFECTIVENESS? no good having a fast scanner if it finds squat.

2. the elephant in the corner: use an OS that doesn't have virus/malware issues ....

cheers, Ian

McAfee VirusScan Enterprise + AntiSpyware Enterprise 8.7.0i
AVG (free) is also good.
Combine with Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware.

I also like elephants...

This is a bizarre list.

1. what about EFFECTIVENESS? no good having a fast scanner if it finds squat.

I have come across 2 packages that don't pick up viruses which MSSE does. CA and OfficeScan. CA is the most unmanageable, admin/network wise, slowest scanner.
Between Chrome, Win7 and MSSE I have not had any security issues.

MSSE = Microsoft Security Essentials.

What about update size and frequency?

+1 For Nod32, but if your looking for something free then Security Essentials with updates from a WSUS server is pretty good.

Out of interest sake, I run Windows XP 64bit on some of my pcs and laptop. MSSE doesn't support this OS, nor Windows Server 2003 which XP x64 is based on.

So that is just 1 negative point to MSSE for me.

Personally, I don't love Norton, but the Symantec Corporate packages are amazing if you can get your hands on these. Minimal resources, no problems, 1st take action then ask you whether you want to undo the action or go along with it. I have people coming back to me asking for this software again after they bought new pcs and used whatever other suggestion people gave them.

Currently using Symantec Endpoint Protection, works by fat the best and never had problems on it with several systems, OSs ect.

One other issue is familiarity. I avoid changing because changing security software is like changing banks, phone numbers, e mail addresses. It's just too much trouble learning new ropes. BTW, I use the paid version of AVG and have considered moving to Kaspersky. I have one Windows XP, three windows 7 machines, all 32 bit

Norton 360 for me. Seen it in the office - it picks up stuff that NOD does not even know exists. (we use nod and norton in the office)

The following combination works for me :

1. Smoothwall with URL Filter on the perimeter
2. MSE and Avast on the inside

At work, the same.

No problems so far.
