Chrome for Linux may shake up Firefox

I installed it this morning and must say, I'm finding it a bit jerky when trying to scoll up and down web pages.

The speed of the interface also seem pretty much the same as Opera, except Opera don't have that jerkiness.

Can someone please explain why there is a so called "browser war"? What is it all about? Why does Firefox even exist? I mean it is free, so why are the developers putting so much time and effort in it if there is no financial reward? Is it an ego thing?

Why is there a browser war?

Not if it Alpha on Linux. It isn't finished yet, there has to be at least a stable edition before it can be any threat.

To make things better? To give people more choice? Competition sparks innovation.

With your mentality we should all just be happy with IE. Weird seing as SAs always complain about a lack of choice/competition

If people want to try a light weight QT based browser try Arora, http://code.google.com/p/arora/

It's still new but I suspect it has a good future.

Why is there a browser war?

There is plenty of financial reward.

You need to realise that just because the browser is free doesn't mean the Mozilla Foundation doesn't bring in money. Remember that the Mozilla Foundation is exempt from taxation. The Mozilla Foundation also receives sizable donations from big corporations. Most of their funding (around 85% or so) comes from Google. Google pays to have www.google.com as the default homepage of Firefox. The funding arrangement with Google has been extended to 2011.

In 2006 the Mozilla Foundation received a total of $66.8 million. (thank you wikipedia)

Don't worry, those developers don't work for free, they get rewarded well enough.

So no it isn't an ago thing, it is a job, that they get paid to do.

Why is there a browser war?

Free to use does not equal no profit. Let me give an example, Vodacom's PleaseCallMe is "free to use", but do you honestly think Vodacom is doing it for free?

errm i am confused with this statement, it is free because they know someone will phone said number and they make money.

How does firefox, opera and the rest make money?

Your example is piss poor i think as it is pretty obvious a please call me should lead to a phone call made to the number and bam there is profit for vodacom. So it is free for the person sending the please call me but they are making money with the people who phone the please call me. So if i download firefox for free who is making money on the other end?

Why is there a browser war for something that is free and let's be honest we all have our favorite's but they all do the same thing. I suppose if we knew how chrome, firefox and opera are making profits then we would understand. I know microsoft are doing it because they make plenty money out of windows and can afford to spend time on it.

I put chrome up there with the opera, it will guarantee to work with their back end. Since it is closed source, I doubt it will take the Linux world by storm. Their Google Earth is barely working on Linux.

Find a rock and hide under it.. you have must of wondered into wrong century......

Alright so all you can do is find a rock? Your not telling us why there is a war and how these companies are turning a profit on something they develop for what seems to be free?

I suggest you climb out of your rock and tell us :p

Chromium is open source. From http://code.google.com/chromium/:

Chromium is the open-source project behind Google Chrome. We're releasing a first look at Chromium and invite you to join us in our effort to....

I used to like firefox, I swore it was the best way to get around the web,,,,,but then Opera happened,,,and now firefox do seem rusty (but compared to IE7 its a polished gem). Will really advise everyone to give Mrs.Opera a go ;)

This is only partially correct. Yes, they make money from the person who then calls back, but they also advertise via the please-call-me sms and the company who wants the advertising also pays them. So like Telkom with their double billing for phone line and DSL line, they are making a pretty penny from these.
