Chromecast in SA.

I've only got 1 word for all you Android lovers...Airplay! :)

I'm a big ios fan, but what makes this great is that it directly connects to the url so it doesn't drain battery or keep the phone awake, so in essence you phone just sends a command to the stick where to get the video and the stick does the rest...besides this works great on ios not just android.

Did you do anything special to make it work? I just got one and it cant connect to my wifi :(

Just as a side-note, I've managed to set mine up and get Netflix and Hulu+ to work without a dd-wrt router. As long as you can find a way to telnet/ssh into your router, you should be able to add an iptables rule to get around the DNS issue. I managed to do this with a Netgear DGND3700V2 router.

Nice one. I'll try that tonight. The Chromecast is a perfect example of unobtrusive technology. You forget its there and just use it. My 3 year old figured out how to cast youtube to it by himself. Last night the volume was too loud - I was busy on my desktop in the study. I just opened crome - connected to it and set the volume of the clip lower.

Now if they'll just release the SDK we can get started on making it even more usefull.

We had the same issue when testing it in my office. Check your router settings, maybe something there is blocking it.

It appears that it just doesn't like my network security. If I turn WPA off and run as an unsecured network, there are no issues. But WPA on, it connects to the network, but has no throughput.

Not sure which WPA you are using specifically, but from what I have read, Chomecast doesn't support WPA Enterprise and also it seems to prefer WPA with AES encryption (as apposed to TKIP+AES.

Yeah tried that. WPA or WPA2 both on personal don't work

I have been trying for the last 4 hours to get my Chromecast to connect with no luck.

I have tried two different routers (Linksys running Tomato, and a Trendnet), but I keep getting:

'Chromecast connected to <wireless network>, but can't access the internet'.

My internet definitely works, I have 7 wireless devices in my house and they all connect to the internet just fine.

I have also tried every suggestion on the internet regarding this problem, but without luck.

Does anyone have any ideas? Please put me out of my misery.

You try changing the routers DNS to Googles?
Also does it work on if you turn password protection off on your wifi?

I did try with password protection off on wifi, but there was no issue with my Chromecast connecting to my wifi. I did not try change the DNS.

I did, finally, manage to get it working through my phone's hotspot. Once it was connected like this, the Chromecast did a software update, and then I reverted to my home wireless and it started working. :)

Well done. Mine still refuses to send any data over this wireless network if they password is on. But I think my old dlink is to blame.

I give up. After working perfectly last night and this morning, it now refuses to even find my wifi, never mind connect to it.

Nothing has changed since this morning, and every other device in my house can find my wifi just fine.

I am just about ready to return this thing. It's supposed to be a convenience device, but at this rate it's less hassle to carry my desktop downstairs and plug it straight into my TV every time I want to watch Youtube, than using a chromecast.

I guess some people get lucky and other's not so much, but this device is not working with two different, very common routers. It's very hard to recommend buying one.

Mine's (fortunately) been pretty much rock-solid for the past couple of weeks. Just works.
I must say though that I wish that there was more app support. It feels so much more closed and limited than even my ATV...and that's an Apple product! Google isn't being very forthcoming about updates or plans for the Chromecast either. It almost feels like they released an idea and have not quite figured out where they are going with it yet...like Google Glass.
If I were able to cast from more apps it would be a clear and viable alternative to buying an ATV or Roku. Plex support would go far to make it a killer product. Even being able to cast media on your phone (pics/music/video) would at least show that they are trying for goodness sake! Right now, its an incomplete product with squandered potential.

I am thinking of buying a new wireless AP/modem. Can someone recommend one which actually works with the chromecast?

For anyone with a Mikrotik router, I used this to get Netflix working with UnoTelly for Chromecast.
Obviously just replace <UnoTellyDnsIP> with the appropriate ip.

/ip firewall mangle add chain=prerouting dst-address=8.8.8.8 action=mark-connection new-connection-mark=8.8.8.8-forward protocol=tcp dst-port=53
/ip firewall mangle add chain=prerouting dst-address=8.8.8.8 action=mark-connection new-connection-mark=8.8.8.8-forward protocol=udp dst-port=53
/ip firewall nat add action=dst-nat chain=dstnat connection-mark=8.8.8.8-forward to-addresses=<UnoTellyDnsIP>

/ip firewall mangle add chain=prerouting dst-address=8.8.4.4 action=mark-connection new-connection-mark=8.8.4.4-forward protocol=tcp dst-port=53
/ip firewall mangle add chain=prerouting dst-address=8.8.4.4 action=mark-connection new-connection-mark=8.8.4.4-forward protocol=udp dst-port=53
/ip firewall nat add action=dst-nat chain=dstnat connection-mark=8.8.4.4-forward to-addresses=<UnoTellyDnsIP>

I got one spare chromecast left if someone wants to buy. R580. Sealed
