Edit *Normal Chromecast, not Chromecast Audio Device

Hi gents,

I've installed (well plugged in) a chromecast into a spare tv in the bedroom. Unfortunately the tv has pretty shoddy speakers and the sound quality is bearable but not up to standard. It's plugged in via HDMI and the telly has no Digital Audio output or any other outputs that would work with hdmi in.

I've googled with few results so I thought I'd ask what options are available. A cheap media box that has hdmi in? A hdmi splitter with audio out? Hdmi to RCA? Open to suggestions but I'd like to keep the costs low.

No idea of cheap alternatives...just posting to say the thread title contains the name of a device (Chromecast Audio) that isn't related to the problems you describe. It was confusing for a minute (I have both types of Chromecast).

Yeah saw that now and realized there is a chromecast audio, apologies for the poor title

Your TV should have a headphone jack or optical audio out. Cheapest option I can think of would be to get a pair of desktop speakers or soundbar or micro hi-fi depending on budget.

The other options you mention would still require you to have a set of speakers to output the sound once you figured out how to get it from your Chromecast to wherever.

Tv has headphone jack?
Run that into a hifi / speaker setup for basic 2 channel audio?
Or you you want more than 2 channels of audio?

edit: eh/ neoprod beat me to it :).

It has a headphone jack but because the input is hdmi it won't output via the headphone speakers, tried it over the weekend and the sound still came through the TV. There is no other audio out available, it's an older LED.

Something like this would be perfect but haven't been able to find one locally :

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00BIQER0E/ref=oh_details_o00_s00_i00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

^, huh? Thought the headphone port redirected whatever sound was coming out of the TV regardless of input. Is that hdmi clause written down in your manual or is your headphone port broken?

Edit: check if you have to specifically set the audio output to headphone. Unlikely since most of the time that's an autodetect but can't hurt.

Are you outputting audio to a Stereo Amplifier or some PC speakers?

Here are some options for you

HDMI to HDMI + 3.5mm Analog Audio Out -> http://avsupply.co.za/product_info.php/converters-hdmi-hdmi-analogue-converter-p-57

HDMI audio extractor with Stereo RCA and Optical SPDIF output -> http://avsupply.co.za/product_info.php/converters-hdmi-audio-extractor-converter-p-676

If you want to see all the options available, visit our Audio Extractor section -> http://avsupply.co.za/index.php/audio-visual-audio-extractors-c-26_118

Yeah it might be that the headphone port is not working. The tv is pretty basic Sansui LED STY 1642 and I can't find anything for that model on the net and I bought it second hand years ago without a manual. There is no auto detect on the audio options :(

I'll go through the links from all the other folk and see if there is something viable, thanks so much for the help gents. I'll keep you updated.

I've got spare pc speakers so I'll likely use those to output to as it's the most cost efficient option.

Cool. Please let me know if you need more info on the other extractors we stock

Might have been mentioned here, but this is what I would do:

Chromecast -> HDMI -> Samsung Soundbar -> HDMI -> TV

So not cheap, but you need a Soundbar obviously for this to work.

Yeah but I don't want to invest alot for a telly in the bedroom that is only going to be used rarely. I've gone for a hdmi -> VGA converter will see how well it works when it arrives

I see.

Join the srewards chain and win a soundbar we all have one from there. :D:D:D:D

Everything plugged in well but the cable did not work, showed the chromecast start screen and then the loading screen. After that just a blank screen, I'm guessing a resolution issue or something, going to try a hdmi to rca cable to see if that works.

If you want to go the RCA route, you will need a converter that converts Digital (HDMI) to Analogue (RCA).

Is the HDMI to VGA adapter you bought powered? A customer of ours had the same issue as you when using a similar converter. He saw the chromecast logo then a black screen. This powered converter worked perfectly -> http://avsupply.co.za/product_info.php/converters-powered-hdmi-vga-audio-adapter-p-697

The one I bought is not powered.

Thanks thats a good price. I'm considering just going the hdmi to rca route, would this work? :
