Chromecast: please help with audio

Yes, but then you lose picture quality (HD to SD). If you can return the VGA converter you bought, rather get the audio extractor, or our HDMI to VGA converter

Don't mind losing picture quality as its in a bedroom and just for the odd tv show / movie. I suspect the HDMi to Av will be more straight forward and hassle free!

For the HDMI to AV solution, you will need a Stereo RCA to 3.5mm Female cable (PC Speakers), and a composite RCA cable extra (Video to TV). For the HDMI to VGA + Audio solution, all you need is a VGA cable

My suggestion would be the HDMI to VGA solution. If you eventually upgrade the chromecast, you can connect the old one to a VGA monitor in the kitchen, study, etc.

Thanks AV Supply, will be placing an order from you this week.

Placed the order, decided to use my old surround sound system with the chromecast and plug in a media player via vga into the same tv. So I went for the HDMI to RCA from Avsupply as it will also allow me to use both devices at once. I'm post feedback once it's arrived and plugged in.

I would like to continue this conversation. I also have a Chromecast in the one HDMI port in this TV. Then I have a Philips DVD player with a 6.1 surround sound system - this model. At the moment it's connected via 3.5mm to the audio port in the TV. However I don't think this can handle 6.1 audio separation.

The DVD player also has HDMI out, coaxial, 2 sets of red/white connectors, digital out and component cables, so it's pretty well specced. What's the best way of connecting the TV to get true 6.1 surround?

According to the specs, your DVD system has a Digital COAX input. If your TV has an optical output, you can use a Digital Optical to COAX converter to get surround sound. Here is the product link -> http://avsupply.co.za/product_info.php/converters-digital-way-audio-converter-p-675

**EDIT - Doesn't look like your TV has optical out. Unfortunately we don't sell an HDMI to COAX Digital Converter, unless you buy the 4x1 Switch (out of stock at the moment). Your next best bet is an HDMI to DVI converter with Digital COAX output. We can throw in a DVI to HDMI converter for free (For the output to TV). Audio is working fine, only hiccup was the default brightness is a bit high but I've adjusted it and everything is running perfectly. Thanks for all the help!
