Hi,

Does anyone know of any over the counter tablets that are as effective as Sudafed?

I really can't afford to go to the doctors anymore because my medical aid doesn't cover consults nor prescribed meds.

I've tried almost everything to try and keep my sinuses under control, but they just seem to be getting worse day by day. The sinus pressure is unbearable and I can't seem to concentrate on anything. They've earned me a warning at work last week which is why I'm posting this. Need all the help I can get.

Well i don't have chronic sinus, at least i don't think so but every morning i get it and i pop a couple sinutabs the pink and purple ones, i take both and it clears it up but obviously this is not ideal.

Better than a running nose and sneezing for 5 hours though.

Would your medical aid cover a medical procedure to try help the issue? Not sure what medical plan you are on but chronic issues are generally covered by a medical aid if they require surgery
 
Sterimar spray works wonders for me. But you could also just sniff sea water if you are near an ocean or salt mixed into water if not
 
For temporary relief this does genuinely work:

"Forget Sudafed. Here's an easier, quicker, and cheaper remedy to relieve sinus pressure: Alternate thrusting your tongue against the roof of your mouth, then pressing between your eyebrows with one finger. This causes the vomer bone, which runs through the nasal passages to the mouth, to rock back and forth, says Lisa DeStefano, D.O., an assistant professor at the Michigan State University college of osteopathic medicine. The motion loosens congestion; after 20 seconds, you'll feel your sinuses start to drain."

Also, it's a good reason to give up smoking if you do. The wife and I subsisted on Sinuend for years. Since giving up smoking I doubt we average taking 2 per month.
 
Pay to visit a doctor, pay for Rhinocort. It'll change your life and you'll keep your job.
 
If your sinus is very bad then you going to need a nasal corticosteroid which requires a doctors script, or a dodge pharmacist. I would use fluticasone not budesonide

Dont use sudafed to stop your allergies chronically its a bad idea.

Manage the mornings with loratidine / ceterizine or desloratidine (all have generics now and are fairly cheap). Night use old school allergex.

Ive put a few patients on sinupret before and they claim it works. Austell laboratories launched the product with their big guns from germany to lecture us and its got some solid journal backing has shown some effect in chronic sinusitis

Move to a different climate/polution exposure.

I used to have a permanent snot nose from as early as I can remember till age 20 when I moved from Somerset West/Stellenbosch to Cape Town. It cleared up immediately.

Iliadin works wonders for me, but as mentioned previously not to be taken chronically.
 
I have the worst sinuses my ENT reckons he has ever seen... so I have 15 years of experience with this...

1 Over counter tablets do nothing more than relieve pain and dry out your sinuses (dry is bad)
2 Chronic sinus sufferers usually have (a) Polyps and (b) blocked / restricted drainage channels and deviated a septum
3 Daily sinus douching keeps you sane!

You need to treat the cause and not the symptoms to live comfortably. Go to an ENT, let him/her scope your nasal cavity. Its not so bad, I prefer it without the numbing spray. Personally I have had Polyps removed twice, nasal cavities washed out and drainage holes made larger. To maintain decent sinuses after that, I douche sometimes twice a day. I have used Flo Sinus Care and Salex SSR . They are both just simply salt, bicarb and water.

When I have sinus infections now, I have to be on an extremely strong antibiotic for a minimum of 10 days (5 day courses are useless) and I have to take them with a steroid to help fight the infection. So make sure you get an effective combination when you get medicated. Oh and forget about a normal GP, go straight to an ENT.

I avoid all over the counter products when it comes to nasal sprays.... they are no use to a chronic sufferer... For pain releif I use Sinutab with Codeine Tabs.

Sinucon \ Sinuend works for me, I use a couple a week. I get mine from the Clicks pharmacy over the counter. Cheap as well, think it's in the region of R25 for 20 tabs.
 
Fexo works me 1 tab in the morning and at night i use a nasal spray called nexomist. Works brilliantly for me. The major plus of Fexo is that does nit make your drowsy.

Fexo is about a R120 for 30 tabs.

Not always the case.... I have no allergies, we gave up testing to find one (millions of things one can be allergic to). My ENT (and I have had 3 including a specialist surgical ENT), all say some people are just inclined to infections, allergies or not. But if you have not been tested, big ones are dust, pollen and grass.
 
Have you got pets?

If so, they must not go where you sleep or near your face and if you touch them wash your hands so you do not touch your face...

Vacuum regularly, even the couches.

My sinus headaches from hell have disappeared since I left that area.
