Hi guys,

So to keep it short, I've had numerous high latency problems in the evenings and heavy jitter on my ADSL line.
I stay in the Newlands area in Cape Town. I've reported numerous faults with telkom but nothing.

I asked my ISP to look into it (Cybersmart) and I got the following response: (I sent them a tracert of 3 IP's the left and middle tracert on the screenshot is to IP's that route through the CINX network)

I’ve done a few checks and I’ve taken a look at the trace routes you have provided.

There does appear to be some noise on your line according to a DSL interrogation I have performed. At this point it’s nothing to be too concerned about if your internet connection is not intermittent, but I do advise that you consider having your DSL/POTS filter checked.

The trace routes on the left and middle, route to addresses that pass through cinx, and there are currently no available ports on the current cinx switch so congestion occurs from that point onwards. Also, if you take a look at the trace route in the middle, on the third hop, you’ll notice a high ping time which indicates congestion at the last mile. While this may not always be a high value, keep in mind that there is also currently no available ports at the exchange you are connected to, which means that during peak traffic periods, your exchange will become congested and performance will drop, which Telkom may have failed to mention to you.

The trace route on the right does not route through cinx, and therefore no latency occurs. Unfortunately, your problem with latency when gaming lies mainly with the cinx infrastructure, and is something that is beyond our control.

What I can suggest to you, is to opt for a fibre connection. If you’re interested, let me know, and we’ll advise you further on how to obtain a fibre sevice.

So, with the above said, does anyone have any suggestions what I can do. I love my gaming and this problem is making it extremely difficult for me :( I've tried getting telkom to route my connection through a different exchange but haven't been successful yet. They've also, apparently, reset my ports etc...

Anyone?

Cant help you now.

What I can say is that on Telkom FTTH (through whatever ISP) there are no such problems.
I am a few km say from you.

Depending on where you are in Newlands fibre is either imminent to about 7 months away..

Life will be better... soon

You have a local exchange (every suburb has one or more). I think you are confusing that with CINX.

Post your line stats from your router and a tracert.

It is probably an exchange issue as I had a problem that was almost exactly the same. I live in Claremont and had an issue that I kept on reporting as an exchange issue. No luck from Telkom's call center help. Eventually got in touch with TelkomZA. I kept on reporting the issue and recording the information for them. They realised that after I'd tested all the hardware my side that it might actually be there side so they took a look. After 3 months of issues they found the problem was a failing network card of some sort at the exchange. Try PM TelkomZA and see if he can help you out.

Not sure if its related but my friend is on cybersmart and for the last couple weeks he has had issues with unplayable latency to mweb servers however other servers are fine.

EXACTLY the same issue Loppas. I play CS:GO and their match making feature only uses Mweb servers. If I play on Telkom Do Gaming servers, my latency is perfect.

Thanks for all the other responses. Unfortunately fibre isn't supported in my street :( If I move 50 meters away to a different street I can get it but not at my specific address :( So bleak!

I'll just keep hassling telkom till something happens :/

Here's the screenshot. The left and middle is on CS:GO servers that go through CINX the right tracert is on a Telkom server (no issues).

Any ideas guys?

I am eligable for a 20mbps line, (currently on 10mbps). Do you guys think if I upgrade it might solve this problem?

is it just me or does your ISP route through VOX?:wtf:.. that 6th hop is where your issues start, try another ISP like axxess, afrihost, mweb etc

You can test with a trial account from another ISP to see if the lag is still there but clearly the latency is coming in after reaching cybersmart's network so it has nothing to do with your line.

I haven't thought of that. Thanks Krustyrsa and Loppas, now I have something to work with :)

If all else fails, I'll keep harassing telkom. I need to convince around + - 12 house holds in my street to sign up for fibre and that's not going to happen... If it's not the ISP, perhaps upgrading to a 20mbps will fix it. Otherwise, I'll stick to singleplayer games till I find another flat to rent :P
