Circulating vs fresh air.

I'm sure I saw with my last service they changed some or other cabin air filter. When last was yours changed? That might be why.

Ah! I will need to check the air filter then. The air filter still looks in good condition but maybe I should replace it anyways. Bought the car second hand and it has been standing for a while.

If I leave circulation of (so on "fresh air") I get this musty smell coming out of the vents and it doesn't go away, whether the AC is on or off.
If I switch it to Circulation the smell goes away.
If I have it on AC and Circulation the smell is there for a couple of seconds and then it goes away.

Any idea what may cause it? I did do a serve on the AC (replacing gas) a few weeks ago and the musty smell is still there when circulation is switched off.
Replace pollen filter.

Recirc is also useful on a dusty road. Switch it to that, put the fan on to create a positive pressure inside the vehicle and it stops dust from coming in.

Your car funny enough does create pressure, think about when you close all the windows and have the fan on full blast . . . Where does the air go ?

Normally by the rear wheel arch there is a vent to allow air to escape from the vehicle when driving. This is normally a one way valve so if the pressure in the vehicle exceeds a certain amount this flap opens, otherwise it is closed to prevent bugs and dust from coming in.

And as a side note to the above, if you ever in an accident make sure they replace your wheel arch cover otherwise the tyre kicks up water through this flap and your end up with a swimming pool in your boot.

When recirculating, the fan draws air from inside the car to pump into the car. Net pressure change zero.

Where do I find the pollen filter? It's a Hyundai Accent 2006

Generally in the passenger footwell. Never worked on a hyundai though, sorry. It will be documented in your owners guided, either under cabin filter or pollen/dust filter

You are correct, I threw this little bit of info in when not using the recirculating mode.

Thanks will check it out. Have only had it a couple of months so still getting to know the vehicle. My Golf only had windows and the filter was the beanie on my head.

Well, I have friends who never seem to switch the air circulating mode off, their cars smell of stale farts

I find my Aircon is much more effective on recirculation mode.

I usually put it on that, blast the AC to get it to temp, then switch to open.

a Jetta I previously owned, would switch automatically from recirculating to outside air. Always assumed it's because if there are 4 people in the car, you will
soon only be breathing in CO2... Ever since then, I have only used outside air flow.

There are 2 options

Recirculating means you gas yourself on your own farts
Fresh means the output from badly-maintained diesel lorries gasses you

Oxidized poop, a.k.a farts, seem like the safer option
