Ok so this is what I have: Frontloader, Sub (think it's 15") and two JVC 6x9's

I went to an audio place and they quoted me R2700.00 That's for supplying the amp, and two 5" Sony speakers for the doors, as well as all the installation...

Is this a reasonable quote?

Depends on the type of speakers and amp...

Pretty hard to say without more info. Ask them for some specs

Will do when I get money... :)

EDIT: I have about R1500.00 to spend at the moment. What amp would you recommend so I can maybe buy it myself, and get the rest installed before buying the other speakers....?

I have a frontloader that I want to put in, it is currently in a VW Polo. Will I be able to swap it out myself or is it best to go in somewhere.

I also have JVC 6x9's and a subwoofer, So all I need is an amp right?

Thanks

Yes you can swop it out without problems, just make sure you do the wiring correctly! You don't want to blow a fuse just yet! If you have electrical knowledge, do it yourself. It's really not that difficult.

What frontloader do you have? and what how much watts is the 6x9's ? The frontloader should be strong enough to power the 6x9's without needing an amp.

For the subwoofer you will need an amp most probably, Give us a bit more detail on the setup. I will be able to provide a better reply. :)

It's a Sony GTX-280 frontloader. The 6x9's are JVC 290Watt and the sub is a StarSound, I think it is 15"...

So I attached one of my normal big speakers from my home amp onto a cable in the boot, and it works! Problem is there is soooo much bass, and no way to turn it down on the current crappy frontloader.

Is this bad for the car?

Do you have an amp connected to the Sub? Most amps have their own volume knob, adjust that to a proper level.

I have a sony front loader as well, You can adjust the sub volume from the front loader. Thats only if it's got a sub out.

No I don't have a sub connected....

I think the 6x9's are blown cause when I connect them to the current sound system, as soon as you turn it up past low volume hey sound really distorted....

My Sony GTX280 has a sub out it's two plugs for cables....

I looked at the wiring and in the car at the moment it looks completely different from what the Sony needs, I will have to take it to a place...

Are you quite experienced in car sound, because I am really confused and need someone to tell me what to get/do?

You have R1,500?

I'll sell you my MBQuart 6.5" splits (crossover) and 5" MBQuart coaxials (Discus series) - as well as a 50w RMS x 4 Infinity Reference amplifier for that price.

One of the dust caps in the center of the speaker is marginally dented - makes no difference to sound.

Anyone on here that knows their sound, will tell you MBQuart are streets ahead of Sony, Pioneer, Panasonic or JVC. Absolutley guarantee you're not going to get much better.

I have R1500 including installation costs? Can you install it for me and are you in Durban? Also where will I put the coaxials?

EDIT: Also would those speakers fit in the door of the citi golf?

No - I'm in JHB and can't install. Just thought I'd help :/

I don't know what the Golf looks like. I had the splits in my front door and the coaxials at the rear. The 4 channel amp was bridged to provide 100w RMS into 2 channels - more than enough power for the fronts and ample headroom.

I had a Kenwood D Mask headunit (5v pre out, seperate RCA/s for front, rear and sub etc) and upgraded the speaker cables. The coaxials - although extremly good - were basically for ambiance and ran off a cheap Targa amplifier.

I had 2 channels bridged on the Targa to run a 12" JL amplifier

I went to an informal quality sound show and came out number 1 - ahead of the Rockford Fosgate/MBQuart rep behicle.

I got this system here...
http://www.autostyle.co.za/prodview.php?prod_id=12547
now my question is:

1- The fade in/out and balance doesn't work should i be concerned or is it like that?(autostyle recommended the place to install)

2- There is an opening just above my front loader which was covered by my original radio. how can i cover this up. Im assuming im not the only guy with a citigolf with sound.

3-I want to add front speakers, (as im using the stock speakers in front)now will i be able to do it myself. is it as simple as just replacing the current speakers or are amps and what not involved?

4- Will the 4 ch amp be able to support the speakers in front?

PS sorry for jacking your thread.:p

I read this all in the other thread - just couldn't assist ;) I'll give a guess though ...

1) You only have one set of RCA's out going to the amp - and from there you have have the 4 speakers to the amp? If you have only one, generally it won't work - as you'll have no 'rear' RCA's to fade to.

2) Yup - you get kits and things which you hardly notice when changed. My brother had his Golf front loader swopped for a Sony.

3) Dunno :/

4) Channel per speaker ...

I've installed about 3 different sound systems now, 1 in my car and 2 for friends, my experiences so far:

My first setup in my car had 2 amps, 1 x 2500w 4ch for the split system, front and rear, and 1x 4000w monoblock for the sub woofer. It was loud as in your ears feel like they are going to bleed (other cars windows would rattle when parked next to me at robots :p ) but it caused problems, the headlights dimmed very badly, the revs would drop on bass drops, and if the bass was really hectic the splits would be starved for power, most importantly the split systems were being drowned out somewhat.

My second setup was 1x 4ch amp for 2 split systems, no sub, wasn't impressive, but the split systems were on the cheap side.

Third setup I'm most impressed with, we got 2 split systems, Infiniti Cappa's and a single 2ch Amp (can't remember the power rating sorry). Then wired the split systems in parallel. It had no sub but it was hectically loud.

So basically my advice:

Firstly co-axle and 6x9's don't even begin to compare to a Split system, not even close. If you want loud + good audio quality a split system is the only choice. Btw. a Split system is basically a set you buy that comes with a filter that filters the mid range and high range, 2 tweeters and 2 mid range speakers, you wire them to the split.

Secondly, 4ch is a waste of time, let me explain why, a Amp may be rated 100W rms @ 4ohm and 200W rms @ 2ohm, so it puts out twice at much power at 2ohm. But most split systems run @ 4ohm, so if you wire them in parallel then you have 2ohm and get much more from that amp.

The down side? You won't have front and rear anymore, your two left speakers and two right speakers will be in parallel running from the HU's output so you'll have the same loudness front and rear. I never use the front/rear volume thing anyway so to me that isn't a problem.

Lastly 2ch amps are usually more compact anyway so it's easier to mount.

My 2c.

Right so I got 6x9's installed as well as Kenwood 6" mids that I bought, sounds pretty good...

Now question: My Sony frontloader has two RCA outputs on the back for a sub out... Does that mean I can plug a sub straight into there, or would I need an amp?

Now I have another problem. It was sounding rather tinny so I took it to another sound place and they said there was something wrong with the phasing.... They said I must switch the polarities on the two back speakers, so I did that and it sounded really nice! But now... after a while the left 6x9 has started to make a crackling sound on every bass drum kick... Have I screwed up the speaker (I didn't put it too loud)? Also can someone tell me what the phasing is?

You'll need an amp for the sub : RCAs to amplifier, subwoofer to amplifier.

Phasing just means the wires (+ and -) are switched. They also refer to it as polarities. As you said, you get tinny, muddy sound - no damage at all.

So your speaker is moving IN when it should be moving OUT, as its reversed
