City Power Implementing 'Load Limiting'

Well, the destruction of household appliances due to flipping the power off and on is also something that Citipower could and should foresee.

I want to purchase shares in the white good suppliers, who do you think that the insurance companies (Santam, etc) and Citipower will source the white goods/electronic appliances from ?

City Power will warn residents when they need to switch off non-essentials to avoid load shedding.

So htf does this work? How much do you have to switch off to not be shed? If you have to switch off everything you might as well be shed.

And how many lightbulbs/appliances will it kill by the constant switching on and off?
Eskom tells municipalities how much load they need to shed; it is up to the municipality to arrange how the drain on the national grid is handled.

If the municipality can convince everyone to conserve 25% of the usual load or whatever, then that municipality can get by without having to shed anyone's power.

Must admit 30 seconds to switch on is too fast . Must make it at least 5 minutes for fridge/freezer to settle

With the CRT displays the time is 30 minutes before you should switch it on again. Not sure about other appliances, but it is not good for them.

30 minutes! Why is it so long?

I had a taste of this load limiting crap this evening, I was not impressed with the potential it has to damage appliances especially the major ones.

Load limiting is the same crap principle as ripple relays where something you pay for, has its use dictated by an outside party.

Can you explain how it happens? I heard that you get a SMS 30 minutes before that. Do you then get another notification when the smart-meter cuts the power, or does it just go off? When the power goes off, how long does it stay off - is it 30 seconds off, then 30 seconds on, then 30 seconds off or is the interval longer/shorter.

Do you then also get a notification if/when load-limiting is over? And in case if you never got the SMS and you get home and the power is off, do you then know if it is load-shedding or load-limiting? Apparently there is also some device you plug into a wall-socket - does this actually work if the power is off?

Lights = electricity. A co-worker told me, that last night he watched how the load-limiting worked and his house turned into a "disco" with power dropping every 30 seconds. A true joke the way this is done as it will destroy plenty of equipment or reduce the lifetime of electronics with COJ not being accountable for it.

I am wondering what the legal aspects are. Surely users must have received a change of TOS or had to sign something as part of this change or is this just done without consulting with customers?

Wow, it is hard to believe that anyone can be that stupid!

Load limiting could be a great thing if done correctly, but this takes the cake :/

CityPower has yet to answer my email. In the interim I have asked my insurance broker to dig around and see what the rules are. Somehow I think that insurance companies will shift liability to either the owner or the government agency - in which case it is better to have your damaged equipment being stolen - at least you will get it settled then.

There was no prior notification, the power went off at about 20:00 last night, at first I thought it was load shedding but I checked the earth leakage to see if the power had tripped, as I was fumbling about in the dark doing that, the power came back on and then went off a few seconds later (my impression was less than 30s), that repeated another 2 times by my count.

Luckily I was aware of this thread and realised what was happening so I starting flipping circuit breakers off to limit damage to my appliances as well as to avoid being cut off for the duration.

My neighbours were not so lucky as their power was only restored at about 22:00.

Is this meant to be their testing phase?

This is happening to people who aren't even due for load shedding. So now we're punishing the people on their "nights off" by reducing their usage to little more than a candle's worth anyway? Why don't we all just go and sit in the bush with paraffin lamps and pick our noses, you halfwits.

Mind boggling retardation either way. I reckon the outcry here is going to be something else.

"Your lights will go off for 30 seconds and they will go on again. This will happen five times. If you do not respond you’ll then be cut off completely from the system."

The arrogance of these phuckwits is beyond shocking.

I later checked the twittering schedules for Tuesday evening and my block was not scheduled for load shedding at all.

It is clear to me that ****ty Power will be aggressively targeting the 92000 odd smart metered homes/businesses regardless of the block they fall under, and regardless of what the load shedding schedule is for everyone else that doesn't have a smart meter yet.

If you have a smart meter installed you are now in a virtually defined block that can be load shedded dynamically at any time and without sufficient prior warning.
