City slicker

This is indeed good news

Information from telecoms regulator Icasa indicates that more than 12 municipalities - among them, Tshwane, Ethikwini (Durban), the City of Johannesburg, Buffalo City (East London), the Nelson Mandela Metropole (Port Elizabeth) and Knysna - have successfully applied for PTN licences.
!

Telkom's importance is fading every so slowly.

Once access to SAT3 is opened up a LOT of things will change.

I hope Government doesnt read that, they might just extend Telkom's monopoly.

Cape Town sucks. Cape Town is not worthy of being a city of S.A anymore, Telkom and Cape Town can go to hell.

How does the ECB effect the muni's? Can they now provide services more freely, or is it pretty much the same?

Off the cuff there, heh MrG. ;)

The sentiment of the cutting budgets is not only them, a lot of IT companies are doing it. I almost want to so far as to say it is industry practice.
It is common knowledge that IT skills are sought after and even lacking in SA. :(

Well Rendan, in our neck of the woods down in Durban the power seems pretty much sorted... only two big power cuts in the last month? What more can you ask for?

don't forget the pipe comes from here.. we can just cut it ;)

SO it seems that the SNO is not really the saviour we once thought it might be and the municipalities may do it for the consumer. It is fantastic news and Telkom need to wake up to this or loose a lot more revenue in the coming years. I suspect they dont have the foresight to see that too and will act as the parasites they are and suck consumers dry. There is quite an interesting article in the M&G busdiness section this week on their prices. Viva Municipalities setting up networks for the people.

Bah! I'm not seeing Cape Town on that list!
cape town has a PTN licence (got it some time ago) and are busy finalising the tender for the network

they estimate a saving of r40 million per year through doing this

the smart cape access project already allows free internet access at all libraries (albeit slow and limited it is a start) and this is going to be substantially upgraded

while the ICT budget has been cut - not sure why - it is likely the city will either leverage the existing infrastructure of a service provider or enter into an exclusivity arrangement with regard to maintenance and/or access to the network in exchange for the service provider bearing the upfront expense

i have generally been quite impressed with the people involved

it will, once implemented, specifically enable service provision at a district and local municipality level

yikes @ names.nm that 4 now

Surely telkom don't like all 12 municipalities get away with it?:D
