Hi

I will be importing some goods from Bali Indonesia.

Value about R40 000.

Do I need a clearing agent or would I be able to handle clearing on my own.

In process of registering for importer code with SARS

I'm not sure on the value cap, but you can try push it through under your ID number.

I know in April I stumbled into an issue with DHL where they could not run the import on my ID number as the value exceeded the personal limit and had to provide them with an importers code. The value here was $3842 then.

I'm making a big assumption here but maybe the cap is R50k so you may be able to push it through.

Sea freight
That would probably need a clearing agent just to navigate the minefield that is our ports these days, or else it's going to sit in customs/clearing for weeks if not months.

Correct: You're only allowed 3 imports of less than R50k each per year. Also, remember that SARS uses the ruling BUY rate for exchange rates when doing the conversion calculation, so don't use the rate quoted on the news24 homepage :)

Go to a clearing agent, Its going to be quicker but you will have to pay them for the documents.
If its "Personal Effects" then you would be able to bring it in without having to pay VAT & Duties.|

Also I personally dont think it would be worth it to register as an imported if you are only going to do the odd 1 or 2 imports a year.

Yes, you will need a clearing agent. The company handling your freight locally may already be registered as agents, check with them.
Keep the receipt you got from SARS when you handed your application in handy.
