Clearing your mind.

Change your diet?

Are you still on your no wheat thing or whatever?

I was struggling with the same kind of thing earlier this year. I cut out refined everything, lost 15 kg in the last 3 months, suddenly I feel like my mind is clear. I'm motivated again, im back in the gym (well thats only been a week, but I hope it lasts) and I'm cycling again. Things aint perfect with me, but I'm happy again. I went through some really dark days earlier this year.

interesting . .
i have been feeling cranky & have put on at least 10kg over the last 4 months.
doc says cut refined stuff - keep away from breads / pastries, sugar & dairy for a while

My brain feels fuzzy and disassociated.

I cannot concentrate, and get immediately confounded by multitasking anything.

This extremely uncomfortable state has always been linked with the severity of my depression, which seems to be going through a ****ty patch.

Any ideas how I can blow out the cobwebs?

I suppose exercise is an obvious start...

Clear and tidy your physical environment, things like tidying your cupboards, drawers, sorting out stuff, doing this help you clear the cobwebs of the mind.

Agree with a lot of the comments...

  • Exercise
  • Do NOT stop the anti-depressants! Not until you are ready - and when you do, make sure you stop them slowly over a period of months if possible - been there.
  • Citilopram can have some side effects - maybe discuss the potential to change to escitilopram with your doctor - it might suit you better (generics such as Lexamil are available). Escitilopram also can have side effects but most of the folks I spoke with before opting for it in preference to Citilopram said they had far fewer issues with the newer escitilopram.
  • Very good idea to cut out the refined foods - makes a LOAD of difference!
  • Exercise - but do something you enjoy doing rather than just exercise for the sake of it - that way you'll keep exercising
  • Did I mention exercise?
  • Step away from the E... Ridiculous idea killa!

Just had a thought - maybe you have sleep apnoea? That can destroy any focus

Woah there lady. At no point did I suggest he takes E. I know my post was long but I never said he must take E I used it as an example of what happens with his drug. So just to be clear I never said use E haha.

You will already feel better after 1 week and most probably drop the weight... Just do it.

Killa the mechanism isn't quite the same.

Ecstasy

copa's meds

SSRIs do not as far as I know cause that up & down effect that you describe. Assuming the concentration of the SSRI is kept reasonably stable, the serotonin levels should too. Thats more of an educated guess than me knowing though so it might be wildly incorrect.

Yea but ssris are the same as E. Difference is E depletes serotonin very quickly. The drug copa is on also releases serotonin but at slower rate so E will do it in one session his drug will do over a period of months. Once his drug has done what E does in days it is no longer effective and because it inhibits the reuptake so he is left with no happy juice and a drug trying release happy juice. I may be wrong but it takes a good few months to deplete the levels and once depleted they are not replenished and there is dopamine depletion so after about a year the drug he is on in theory is making him more depressed.

Look I know E is not the same but the release of serotonin is the same only his drug it takes months and dopamine is extremely important as. The reason ssris or in his case the sri works initally is you have good levels but slowly it depletes and blocks replenishing. So you are almost guaranteed to go backward after a few months but as I said I could way way off.

Meditation and mindful exercise... also learn some simple yoga poses and deep breathing. And yes if you're eating a diet with a lot of refined carbohydrate, reducing that can make a difference - you don't realize what an effect blood sugar variations have on mood until you've been off refined carbs a while .

Glad you cleared that up... the long posts got me feeling quite confused about what you WERE actually saying :p

As to citilopram (and other SUI type antidepressants) stopping the production of serotonin - ??? Where do you get that information?

I must admit I did go through about a week of withdrawal. Headaches being the worst, tho I was having them before so I'm not sure if I would have got them anyway. But when my body switched to burning protein instead of carbs it was all good going from there.

If I lose another 2 kg I will be lighter than I have been in 10 years, and I'm sure I will since I have lost 16 altogether now.

I agree, just do it.

No, Beer DOES actually work! There was a study that was done some time ago (by me) and it really picked up my mood, I would give it a go.

so on a lighter note, anyone have any experience / review of Wellbutrin???

Havent read this whole thread yet but to the OP : try doing something that has a 'zen' element but that also has a (short term) goal. Learn to cook a new dish or bake a cake. Go for a walk and set a walk goal (like finding one pink, one red, one orange and one yellow flower before you can turn around and go home). Till a small section of your garden to start a herb garden for the upcoming summer. And so on. The logic here is to do something small that gets your body moving and your mind a little preoccupied with the task at hand but that is short term/manageable enough to not seem overwhelming (as this can often cause a depressive to avoid, procrastinate, delay or just totally ignore the task).

This helps my anxiety when it arises and the walking thing is something I do with my daughter if she is feeling restless.

I'm going to go out on a limb by stating the obvious.

Drinking heavily (as you do), using illicit drugs (as you do), and abusing prescription medicines (as you do) may have that effect on your ability to concentrate.

Yep. I'm in the process of curtailing those behaviours.

Although it must be said that 'using illicit drugs' is a bit of a broad statement for someone who just uses cannabis every now and again.

Also, 'abusing prescription medications' is also a bit strong - If I am an abuser, then most users are abusers.
