The BMW e36 climate control units (CCUs) are known to go bananas. Sometimes it will turn off intermittently while leaving the aircon on, sometimes it will just die and become unresponsive. Only for it to turn on and work perfectly the next day.

If this is happening to you, don't bother going to BMW dealers, they will charge you R3000-4000 to replace the unit. Some after-market companies (Beemos - probably spelled incorrectly) will sell it to you for R800-R1000 with a six month guarantee.

The fix is relatively simple and if you know how to solder you can fix it yourself.
Here is a step-by-step fix. It works.

If you are not able to wield a solder, go to any electronics repair shop and just ask someone to replace the faulty capacitor for you.

@ Electronics Repair and Service Center they do it for R150 (takes 5mins:mad:) and apparently they do about three of these units on average per week as someone else brings these CCUs to them. Obviously good business for the guy whom it is being repaired for.

Corner of 24th street and Michelle Brink str @ the Villeria sentrum in Pretoria.
