Cloned number plates causing e-toll problems

Yes, and for this reason I require pictures of every gantry I have passed. Nuff said.

Naturally, ignoring an existing problem that could stuff up your programme is a foreign concept to government..

Why don't they use e-tolls for something useful like finding illegal activities like speeding fines and finding clone number plates.

Once an illegal numberplate passes they notify a cop car parked further ahead.

It's like they decide to reward people who commit illegal activities and punish those who obey the law. Politicians also don't want their family members in the newspapers.

Made a small modification to my car so as to ID a "fake" and a "real" car...

...not lus for this exercise in futility with Sanral should some ne'er-do-well clone my plates...

How will they detect an illegal number plate? What if it is the original (legit) owner of said number plates?

edit : if they can pull this off successfully somehow, and impound the cars of the ne'er-do-wells who've cloned other people's number plates.... (with a very stiff fine)

Vin number/make and model/license disk.

Where are those Fords SUVs (Territories?) with the cameras now (those should automatically be able to detect number plates "listed" by SANRAL as suspicious)?

And they can also pull off and fine the overloaded vehicles, the 80km/h crawlers in the right and second to right lanes on free flowing/not congested freeway, the drivers driving with their lights off and the ones with faulty rear or front lights.

But... actually improving traffic flow and identifying problematic road users goes against their mandate of doing no work...

It's academic discussion. They indicated the gantries won't be used for things like speed traps.

One of the reasons I am so against e-tolls.

I know there is a vehicle in Gauteng driving around with "my" SUV's number plate, and one in the Western Cape with my sedan's number plate. I get traffic fines from for the SUV even though it was only briefly in Gauteng in the last two years. The sedan has NEVER been in the Western Cape, but has racked up a few thousand Rands worth of fines in Stellenbosch and surrounds.

Tell the cops that's your car which was stolen, and they must bring it back :D

Since 2004 I have had regular visits from the SAPS and summons-servers about my "taxi" which has the same CA number plates as my wife's Jetta. Each time they come along to deliver a summons or to find out why I have not paid a fine, so I now keep colour photocopies of the original registration which is demanded. I have seen pictures of this, it used to be a Toyota hi-ace and now is a Quantum. When I suggest that since the said taxi has been spotted at the corner of AZ Berman and Imperial Street and Swartklip Road (this is in Mitchell's Plain) at least 9 times during 2013, it might be an idea to look down Imperial Street which is not a long street, I get a funny look as if not to tell them how to do their jobs.

The cameras aren't high res enough to see this.

Which cameras?

Law enforcement officers in vehicles have to pull over number plates on the GFIP roads that have been flagged as suspicious. The law enforcement officers vehicle would be fitted with cameras and systems that can read the number plates and compare them to a list.

According to a survey in Gauteng, said Louw, it was found that around 40% of number plates were illegal or non-compliant.

She predicted that the new Gauteng e-tolling system will cause far more fake or cloned number plates to emerge.

So building a house on a weak foundation? Great job guys. Thumbs up to you.

Probably means some of the following:

- doesn't have SABS mark
- wrong font
- not reflective
- letters faded
- letters not eligible in some other way (like dirt between Perspex and layer above it)
- wrong size

Just in case anybody is wondering - there is a number-plate shop at the lower end of Wynberg who will make up "signs" for you, anything you want. Cost is about R 120 a sign

I've lost a few number plates over the years, especially before they were riveted on, and has never been asked for any form of proof of ID or registration for new number plates to be made.

You just implied that these guys are making illegal plates, time for an undercover sting.
