Yes, it's extremely stupid.

I would be as far as to say on your 3'rd renewal (after 10 years) just change it to EB. I can't see the difference. But then again, some people should not be towing ANYTHING, let alone a trailer heavier than 750kg :eek:

But where does one pull the line? My mother can barely drive the poor woman, but she is allowed to have a trailer in excess of 750kg :eek:

Yeah, same, my wife has an EB. She won't even TRY to reverse a trailer, while I have no issue reversing round corners, into parking bays, through gates...

What grates my balls is I had an EB from 1993. I switched it to a UK license, then didn't know about the restrictions on switching back, so I had to do my SA license again in 2008.
So I have a UK license that lets me drive a tank, and a stupid SA license that doesn't let me tow a caravan.

I just want an easier way of "upgrading" my license. Why would a theoretical test not suffice?

LOL I might have tried that when I renewed my license. They picked it up almost immediately :eek:

ha ha ha, my uncle has something similar, converted his bike license from a foreign country,
did it on a moped, got issued a bike license covering super-bikes.

I actually do need to get mine fixed up, I tow boats around often enough.

This is all very interesting.

Maybe I should just go do a Code 14 and get it over with. Anyone know the costs involved now? I recall it having a couple of actual classes involved apart from practical experience you also need theoretical experience iirc. It's a whole course.

You mentioning that. You are into sailing iirc. Do you know what harbor fees are at Harties? I was thinking of buying a sailboat but it will have to be moored at TYC at Harties. No idea what they charge to moor your boat there annually.

Dry sailing or mooring?
TYC is quite expensive. Membership +- 5k per annum, and then mooring another 5 I think. Drysailing is a bit more.

Saw a yacht for a pretty good price. So it will need to be moored. No way I can store that thing where I stay. Yachts are actually pretty cheap compared to powerboats. Obviously needs work but has buoyancy certificates and the like, you can get them for under R 50k. Was just curious :)

I'm assuming that price is annually too? So about R 10k for having your boat moored there year round and a family membership.

TYC is problematic though. We have nationals in durbs in two weeks, we've been able to get zero practice in the last 2 months because of the hyacinth. We're all going to move to the vaal.

Massive problem. I'm going to PM you, I'm honestly thinking of getting into sailing. Mainly just to sit on the water every odd weekend with the wife and kids. Nothing serious. Harties works for me due to it being very close. I just want to chill on the water.

maybe if you did your test later after the rules changed, mine says code 8 as well.

when most just check your disc validity and ask you a few questions to see if your drunk.

Feedback received from underwriting regarding the trailers and Licenses:

The ordinary driver’s licence Code B (which includes all light vehicles such as passenger cars and bakkies) only allows to tow trailers lighter than 750kg. For anything larger, such as a caravan, one requires a Code EB licence.
If you already have a B Code licence you will have to re-do your learners and drivers licence Competency Tests to change to EB.
This is public knowledge and part of the regulations of the road.
Note that if the client is towing a caravan without the correct license the claim may be repudiated.
