There are various ways to skin the caravan cat. One can also opt to use a mini caravan that falls in the sub 750kg space, examples:

Also note, to tow a 750kg unbraked trailer one needs a vehicle with a 1500kg tare weight. If you tow vehicles doesn't have such a tare, you'd need to have the trailer braked.

These days traffic officials are very sticky when it comes to towing, especially with caravans and boats, but bigger trailers as well.
No chance of them just checking your license and waving you on your way, no chance of you convincing them that it's under 750 kg. They'll check the plates of the vehicle and trailer for GVM, GCM and tare weight, end of story, you get taken off the road right then and there.

Playing innocent claiming that you were not aware of the difference between B and eB license also doesn't work anymore and if you get away with it, there is still the insurance thing as mentioned. Insurance companies are known for trying to find every possible reason for not paying a claim and this is certainly one of the first things they'll be looking at.

I have made the choice now to just go do the EC1 license... Something I really don't need in my life now but just want to get it out of the way.

Are you sure it's not a B?

yes, sorry, code 8:confused:

to put another spin on things,

what happens when your towing another car? does these towing rules apply then?

IE If I'm Helping A friend tow a car with a rope/towbar
do the towing restrictions and license restrictions apply then?

so most cars are 1000 KG and above, if Im the one towing, isnt that then illegal with a code B license?

My colleague is sitting in the same boat and also decided to just go do the EC1 while he is at it. Luckally he has got plenty access to Sprinters and double axle trailers at work to practice with and do the license test. Remember there's no need to do the test with a huge truck, as long as you have something with a GVM over 3500 kg and a braked trailer over 750 kg you are cool.
Something like a big Merc Sprinter, even a Ford F250 bakkie.

Towing a vehicle falls under other regulations.

Te other important thing to bear in mind is that it’s not just how much the trailer weights but how much it is licensed to weigh. If you tow an empty trailer which weighs well under 750kg, but it licensed to carry more than 750kg, you’ll still be pulled off.

Ironically, I got an EB license when I turned 18, and til this day I've never towed anything after the day of my license test.

EC, you mean. EC1 is for articulated vehicles up to 16000kg. EC for over that (the old code 14).
Ec1 is for 3500 to 16000kg, ec above 18000
Ec1 will suffice for a caravan ;)

@Pitbull - did you ever do you EC1? In the same boat, wife wants a camping trailer now that we have a little terrorist to keep entertained while setting up... don't really want to do a EB - and then someday in the future maybe a EC...
