‘Coffin assault accused attacked me too’

Middelburg - Just moments before two Mpumalanga men allegedly forced Victor Rethabile Mlotshwa into a coffin and threatened to burn him alive, they also allegedly attacked another man.

Dalton Sithole, who is Mlotshwa’s neighbour, alleged that Willem Oosthuizen and Theo Martins Jackson hurled profanities at him, bumped him with a bakkie, kicked him several times and threatened him with a gun.
He explained that he had been walking from his home near the Eskom power plant when Oosthuizen, who he described as a farmer on a nearby plot of land, confronted him.

“He asked me where I was going and I said I was just walking, but he insisted that I was coming to his farm,” said Sithole, who made a 40km journey to court from his home at Blinkpan.An argument then broke out between the pair, which eventually turned violent, Sithole said.He said Oosthuizen then went to his bakkie and took out a gun, which he pointed at him. He started running, and just when he thought he was safe, Jackson arrived in another bakkie and bumped him with it.

He said Oosthuizen ordered him to get into the back of the vehicle while Jackson proceeded to Oosthuizen’s house. Once Oosthuizen arrived, the pair began kicking him numerous times. They then spotted Mlotshwa and told Sithole to leave.

The alleged attack took place on August 17, the same day that the two men allegedly shoved Mlotshwa into a coffin, threatened to put a snake inside and douse him with petrol, and accosted him.

Sithole said he had since opened a case against Oosthuizen and Jackson, although he waited two months as he feared that he had no proof that they were his attackers. Earlier on Wednesday, Oosthuizen and Jackson made their first appearance in the Middelburg Magistrate’s Court following their arrest on Monday, after cellphone footage showing them shoving Mlotshwa into a coffin emerged and went viral.

They have been charged with kidnapping and assault with intent to do grievous bodily harm.

if this is all true its really messed up.

doesnt make sense why they would take the guy to his house to kick him there and spot the other guy and then mess with him. what is the point?

the ancyl and eff fighting over the victim points is pathetic too. always using the suffering of others to further themselves. NEVER anything positive from them.

Cape Town – Democratic Alliance leader Mmusi Maimane came under fire on Wednesday for condemning racism in a criminal matter and then adding a photo with a mob justice theme to his tweet.

On Wednesday afternoon, he tweeted: “Waiting for the two #coffincase people who act in despicable manner against the South Africa we ought to build. Racism must be destroyed.”

Many social media users were infuriated when they saw Maimane’s tweet.

Vusi Mphazima (‏@vusi_sa) said the pastor’s true colours were coming out another @ChrisUItzinger said the leader of the opposition was promoting violence and vigilantism.

@Kateomega felt it was not appropriate to suggest people should pick up rocks to fight anything.

Echoing her sentiments, @ThaboMakeba1 said: “@MmusiMaimane and do u think answering racism with violence will destroy Racism? Grow up, SA people are expecting justice no throwing stones.”

Maimane was sending out a mixed message, suggested @jonahboat.

“U scaring ur people now, when they see you they see Mandela,I forsee moment of silence on dinner tables today #coffinAssault,” tweeted user @kgaoza4life.

A few wondered if the political party leader would delete his tweet.

Defending Maimane, Xolani Zondo (@XondoZ12) said of the photo: “a meme is not a representation of actions. Please. Let's see this for what it is. A visual representation of feelings.”

They didn't actually do any of that - they were bullying with sadistic threats but ultimately let him go. Yes, it's despicable behaviour that should be punished, but it seems all perspective has been lost. As someone aptly put it on Twitter - "So the threat of murdering people because they're white isn't as serious as putting someone in a box".
