It is indeed, but as a worst case 2.2kw isn't far off. I'd say a more average use case is probably about 1.5 - 1.3kW

Do you have any of those plugs that show instantaneous power draw? It would be interesting to see what you're actually pulling.

Not here in capetown but my 12000btu tcl is on one in dbn which peaks at 1.2kW (I've seen 1.5kW once) and minimum power is 250W with compressor on.
 
Yup, i'm planning to go off grid because of frustrations dealing with CP. I was a prepaid customer for last 20y of good standing, then mid Nov25 they just removed my prepaid meter and replaced with postpaid, no notice, no documentation, basically 'stole' my loaded units and subsequent purchase that then couldn't load.. goooone. Multiple disputes/complaints raised with CP, CoJ, joburg ombud etc.. for irregular removal and now more pressing escalated estimated charges.. Nada. Dec, Jan & Feb CP consumption est charges are literally 10x actual, since I have solar and generate 90% of my demand. So CoJ agents said since I have disputes ref open it wont be a problem to settle balance of bill less disputed amount. I did this, got a spreadsheet going, and paid what I actually used. Now I get pretermination order, 1wk ago, and have to settle or be cut off... this after CP did actual reading 2wk ago but haven't or wont capture the reading!! CoJ says i just have to pay or get job card from CP so they can upload actual reading and correct account, but I tried before with CP for job card when they took my meter but just refused. So I proceed with off grid option with genny, costing me but worth peace of mind not to have to deal with CP. Hope my acc billing corrected or I will be paying both for genny and esc estimated charges.. very poor customer service, CP make youfeel like you a criminal for installing solar

Did you load units monthly and pay the monthly fee

Just disconnect. The hell I went through to get basic things done with COJ, its not worth it to stay connected to them. Something as simple as your meter being faulty becomes a huge issue.

I have peace of mind now because I dont have to worry about their incompetence anymore. No estimated billings, heck no billing at all, no increases, no going back and forth for stupid things like meters, prepaid/postpaid nonsense. It is complete peace of mind.

No, that was my mistake, I didn't know there was this 'rule' that you had to buy x per month and frequency y over the year..!!! Go figure it thought we were in a free enterprise economy and only had to buy stuff you need when you need, guess I was wrong!!
I checked CP website after the fact and there was absolutely nothing on the subject, so I am guessing it was an internal 'policy' not ratified by council, in order to gouge good paying customers, and hence in my view illegal or at least unethical, but hey as long as we can pretend to be meeting our revenue targets, anything goes! Why did CP Isaac Mangena say this auto conversion process was being temporarily halted till June26, im guessing so they get something passed in council on the quiet? Who knows?

This is my plan, I got forms from CoJ, so hoping it can be done without being gouged with long tail of estimated readings till they figure recognize im off grid.. super wanting peace of mind as you say

They did say they were going to convert non vending units to post paid :( you fell into that.
Plus you need to pay R230pm connection fee. Well R400

Probably too late now. They will keep billing estimates even if cable is missing. Its not like he's using any leccy in the first place. Going to have to take a lot of chill pills and go stand in line at their offices.

Yup, got that after the fact! Would have been, though, nice customer focused to get proper notification of this, but then they wouldn't reach their revenue targets! Now its one big deliberate balls up and too much effort to read customer's meter so they can gouge with inflated estimated readings, fictitiously meeting revenue targets and justification for lekker bonuses and their inflated salaries..!!!

Yes was there yesterday, 6.5hrs, achieved nothing except to pay grudge fictitious debt to avoid preterm notice cut off... and how's this, at my last intervention at coj walk in I got them to get CP to take actual reading, which they did, even got the photo from cp tech, but hey presto reading wasnt uploaded to billing system, so I got pre term notice for 'overdue' debt and coj could update cp bill without job card, which im never going to get.. still cant get the one for the prepaid meter the took/stole with my loaded units 4months ago.. really useless unhelpful bunch in the main, exceptions of course but its such a mess they cant really help effectively...

They are doing a lot of underhanded tricks to extract money. When I was at COJ last time, a guy was there because he kept getting termination notices as his due date kept changing every month. They forced him to pay a fine for each notice.

Same way the moment I completed my application for offgrid, estimated electricity billing came back. The amount of hate I have for COJ in particular cant be measured. The moment I start getting issues with water, I am sinking a borehole and cutting that also. Even if there is little ROI in it, I just dont want to feed this gvt money anymore. If there was legal ways to pay zero tax, I would.

I even want an EV so that I dont pay the fuel tax to these people which makes up half our fuel price. They deserve nothing as all they do is squeeze you for everything and give nothing in return.

Fuel tax isn't half the fuel price, it's just over a third but it also includes the salaries for the petrol pump jockey.
But hey remember CoJ wants to change pre-paid meter users to post-paid to fix billing discrepancies (which is why they switched to pre-paid in the first place), when in reality we know it's just so they can estimate your bill and charge you more.

That only works if they plan to never pay you back. I wonder how the rates clearance certificate will work when you sell your house if they’ve been estimating for years.

Someone on here said they use it as interest free credit. They will rock up after 1 year or 2 and they read the meter. All the while they would have enjoyed your money with no interest. And you get it back when its worth less (they are basically holding on to your current higher value money now which will be worth less in a year etc.).
