Friend,

SA has a population of 45 million. The vast majority are achingly poor. SA does not have the depth to improve the infrastructure to the level that would be adequate to serve 45 million people. I hate to make comparisons, but the Infrastructure in North America and Europe is far in advance of what SA can bring to the table - Ever! Have a look at Hong Kong or Shanghai and see the difference. 30 years ago Shanghai was a hole in the wall. Where is it today 40 years later? Where is SA today in comparison.
By my calculation we'll have to wait 10 years to find out. Canadian mathematics I bet. That's what happens when you use a pretend dollar and always have to convert to greenbacks. :p

Sheeshkebab what's with all the name calling here? - sure if her Poisonous Ivyness were posting then it would be different, but is it really necessary to gang up against a forumite from abroad or for that matter fellow forumites from SA?

[thread=45045]Debate instead of low blows...[/thread]

ic, it was not intended as name calling, but rather something that rolled over from DAG: Welkom, where we like to change one another's names to the Afrikaans version.

To IamCanadian, no bad intentions there, and no offense intended.

Ok, you are going off the beaten track here. Where, and please do tell, did I say that Canada is Iraq ... I would really like to know.

So you will be happy with a mediocre service, just because it is free? I prefer to pay my R180p/m, enabling me to NEVER have to walk into a branch, everything is brought to me when I need to sign papers, can transfer, issue cheques (I can even have those delivered at no additional cost, anywhere in the country).

I always say: "If you have enough money, you don't care to part with a little bit of it" :p

LandyMan,

Forget about it. You never said "Canada is Iraq". You said that the USA and Canada were sending their armies to Iraq and screwing up the country. I just repeated that Canada did not send her soldiers into Iraq, 3 years ago they wisely chose not to do that. Do you understand now?

Banks:

Man are we stuck on this or what? One man's mediocre is another man's great service. For us we are happy to do all our banking online or offline or whatever we need to do for free. For us to pay the amount you pay in bank fees would be crazy. Call me frugal but as long as my money comes in and goes out the way it is supposed to then I don't care a whit past that.

"IamCanadian" is just a moniker. I proudly tell all in Canada that I am from SA but I do mention the crap job the ANC are doing there. No offence felt.

Bwana,

"30 years ago Shanghai was a hole in the wall. Where is it today 40 years later? Where is SA today in comparison."

Must be the cold that froze my brain up there for a moment.

Sludge,

"But, as I said before, we can fix up our infrastructure, we can better it and I'm sure we will, we have enough money to do it, we can borrow more if we need to etc."

I hope you do fix it up. I am just saying that the African way is to regress not progress.

Halicon,

"but at -40 in winter um... you better not have power failures".

In Calgary, we have the Chinook wind which is like the Berg wind in Cape Town, so it warms up very quickly some days. Youget used to the winters here and getting out in the snow for skiing or tabogganing or ice skating on a frozen lake or pond is fun. Bring your Hot Choc though you will be glad you did.

Boring Canadians. That is why a lot of South Africans move here to improve the atmosphere and sell Melktert and biltong.
