College Police Think Using Linux Is Suspicious Behavior
Some of the supposedly suspicious activities listed in support of the search warrant application include: the student being seen with "unknown laptop computers," which he "says" he was fixing for other students; the student uses multiple names to log on to his computer; and the student uses two different operating systems, including one that is not the "regular B.C. operating system" but instead has "a black screen with white font which he uses prompt commands on."

Why in this day and age would you still want to use command line.

The mere thought of the fact that those things may be funny to somebody is hilarious. I think I mostly fit the description ;)

i actually use the command line quite a lot. i find i am better able to do a number of things faster

a black screen with white font? surely dos falls into that category too. perhaps he has the last remaining 286.

I live on the command line. To the point where I actually have Eterm seamlessly integrated into my fluxbox desktop.

It's so much easier and faster to use the terminal. What about ssh'ing to a remote machine? And if you switch between different computers a lot (that may not all have the same shortcuts etc) ?

The real question here is why did people start wanting an inconsistent gui in the first place? :D

Becase GUI's are for the non-PC literate people :P
Using the terminal is quite fun! but cant do any multimedia on it afaik

+1. Also the commands are basically the same over all the distros, so if you know the command, you don't need to go look for the item in the menu and then still figure out how to use it.

Bad laws in the hands of simple farm animals. A very bad combination. Slaughter the farm animals and turn them into tasty treats for my pets.

Scripting baby!!

Oh and the fact that no matter what OS you work on, the stuff is similar. No need to be looking in which panel anything is. Oh and much more powerful.

You still have a lot to learn the my young padawan...

Install the following:
MP3blaster:
http://mp3blaster.sourceforge.net/
Mplayer

All good distros will have both in the repositories.

Now ctrl+alt+f1
Login as normal user. Issue the command "mp3blaster" and presto, without even X you can listen to music!
Now exit and cd to your movies folder and issue the following command:
mplayer -x 1024 -y 768 movie_name.avi
And again! Watching movies using frame buffer without X (most distros will set the fb device correctly during installation)! You can now "man mplayer" and learn how to rip DVD's, watch DVD's with subtitles, etc.
Sound? alsamixer

CD writing, document editing, file encoding (CD and DVD), web browsing WITH graphics, what can you not do without X?

People maintaining servers take note, you do not have to have X to enjoy all these tasks, even if you can just shh into the server you will be able to do most anything your little heart desires!

[EDIT]
Ever used ssh with graphics?
Not sure what is meant by this comment, but yes you can even use X over ssh.
