Commission calls for fourth cell operator

“What we have in the South African market is the façade of competition, but what is sadly missing in the midst of all the hype and complex offerings is real substantial competition that benefits consumers,” it states

word.

How about a second (and third and fourth) fixed line operator first with equal access to international bandwidth?

one provider is a monopoly *kof* (telkom), a handful is a cartel *kof* (cell providers and banks)

I love how ICASA is getting all hissy about Multichoice being a monopoly and that the cell companies aren't really in competition but yet is relatively silent about the biggest elephant elephant in the room...

If they're so agitated about Multichoice/Cell companies they should be throwing chair across the room over Telkom.

Other 3 haven't worked out - so how about another? Why not just fix the already inherent problems - and take telkoms death grip off the wheel?!

Oh hell, Commission, Schlomission . It's common knowledge by now that any article/statement/media outing containing the words "commission" , "inquiry" and "call for [some logical improvement which everyone knew about for the last 10 years] " is a load of crock. This is all the gov. do, sit on their behinds at "conferences" and form "commissions" to call for "someone" to "inquire" into the state of "something" so that they can create a lengthy [and useless] report on what is wrong....and that's where it ends. They don't know what to do next and move on to the next "commission".

That's why it was initially Telkom/Multichoice/Automotive Industry, they gave up, now it's Cellphone Operators. At the end of the year we'll probably hear their almighty words of wisdom [aka another commission sitting on this since the end of Apartheid] that the Banking Industry is uncompetitive and we need fresh competition in this arena...duh .
