Commoditising bandwidth

But although the licensing process remains unclear and no date's yet been set for the Broadband Infraco and EC Amendment Acts - they go hand-in-hand - to come into effect, the President's signature in early-January is at least being seen as a step in the right direction in a process that's already taken too long.

Quite tired at the moment so I don't get it, does she mean January 2008 or 2009?

yet more talk and still nothing happens

Nair is not particularly concerned about Infraco being State-owned at this stage. At least it represents Government taking the lead to stimulate the market, he says. And the advantage of being a State asset is that the company can operate without a mandate of maximising profits.
Bwaaahahahahahahahahaha ... no no no ... MBWAAAAAAaaaaaahahahahahahahahahaaaaaaahahaha ... no no no .. really ... NO! This Nair guy does standup comedy?
It won't play in the metro and access network layer, where it's anticipated there will be increased competition, so Government intervention is not considered necessary.
BWAAAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA ... *sigh*.

Governmint steals Eskom's network and makes a company with it, and then puts their buddies in the cashseat, then gives that company nice governmint contracts, not even bothering to put out tenders in their attempt to "add competition".

Then, at the same time governmint says they're adding competition by bypassing the competition, and not actually competing in area's where there may be competition one day soon perhaps imminently.

So ... um ... what exactly has governmint done here? They've built a new company that monopolizes infrastructure that should have been made available to the country to stimulate provider growth, and have in effect randsacked another of the country's hard built resources to not actually compete with the other players in that sector.

BRILLIANT!

Damn man ... I gotto go back to criminal school, I really don't know how they think these things up.

yack yack yack

Those boys only know how to run their mouths, no action..

And whats this talk about "if the companies decide to pass the savings..." frak...
So now we will see more tax money be plught into infrastructure to enable cheep bandwidth, just so they can slap some bogus "value added service" that nobody needs and keep the price the same.

yo this country sucks....

Ya got that right, current government is just that, bunch of criminals cut loose on soem notion of equality for all....

So government will leverage their stake in Infraco like they have leveraged their stake in Telkom to bring prices down? Yeah right.

Stop wasting tax payers money on things that the private sector should be paying for and sell your shares in Telkom.

Haven't you heard that some people are more equal than others? :D

The Electronic Communications (EC) Amendment Act does, however, contain a clause saying that the Minister of Communications may issue policy directives on the framework for licensing a public entity. So presumably we're waiting for this Act to come into effect before these directives can be issued.

for what it is worth the EC Amendment Act came into force on 2 February 2008
