Seeing as Games.saix.net is all but gone, and everything surrounding it is pretty much dead. It seems it's harder than ever to get a server going. At least, I don't have R1000.00 a month to spend on renting decent hardware to host a game.
Me and a couple of friends enjoy Insurgency, but there really is only the one server [GG-ZA] which is a shame because the game ROCKS!! And this comes from someone who has played almost everything. CS1.6, CSS, BF2, BF2142, BF3, BFBC. Well you get the idea. I know Giz does the community a great service by paying for and running this server, but sadly like tonight the servers are down. And a man likes to enjoy his weekend, so... Sad monkey on this side.
Does anyone know what the process is to request a server from one of the numerous ISP's which still offer dedicated game server hosting? Any contacts? [PM] if you have please, I would love to get this going. I think I contacted IS and WebAfrica a month or two ago, but that Black Hole man. Swallows emails, I tell you.
I would be willing to create a website seeing as I am a web-developer for a living to allow the community to donate money towards servers for games they enjoy. But I am not sure it would be worth it. Will people pay for the service, to be able to play the less common games they love? I was thinking of doing like a goal per server / hardware spec of about 1.2K, which is a quad core decent-ish server.
The website would be to show the amount of donations received, how much is needed for the next month to run a particular server, months paid up in advance. Showing and electing Admins who are active in-game, and the respective server admin details. But I don't really want to invest the time creating all this. If it's never going to be received by the community. It would be non-profit of course, purely to be able to community fund the server rental from the likes of IS or Hetzner, and maybe the R50+-/pm site hosting costs.
I would love to hear the community's thoughts on this? Seeing as this is kindoff the only active ISP / Gaming related forums I still know.
