So I`ve chosen two laptops but I cant decide which
CPU,Ram,HDD are adequate/identical for both so I`m ignoring them

Option 1: Lenovo IdeaPad Y580
GPU GTX660M
Resolution 1366 x 768 or 1920x1080
Size 15.6"
Cost 10.5k

Option 1: Gigabyte Q1742N
GPU GT640M
Resolution 1600x900 or 1920x1080
Size 17.3" or 15.6"
Cost 9.5k / 10.5k for 15.6"

Cost difference doesn`t matter to me.
I will be Gaming/rending/coding on either of these
I might not be able to 1920x1080 versions of either.

Question1 GTX660M vs GT640M Obviously the 660M has superior performance but what about thermals and battery life?
Obviously the 660M is wasted on a 1366x768 res.

Question2 Can the 640M handle new games(Blops2,BL2,NFSMW) at low/med? (Obviously the 660M can)

BING BING I`ve heard that 15.6 doesn`t mix well with 1920x1080. Can anybody clarify/provide opinions?

Both of those Nvidia GPUs are going to get hot no matter what you do.

I have a 15.6" laptop with a 1920x1080 resolution and my eyes bleed when I have to use a 1366 x 768 laptop. :P
If you are going to be coding you need as many pixels as possible, unless you love scrolling up and down all day.

What is your price and where did you find the 1920x1080 Lenovo Y580?

Both have optimus when I dont need power which is good :)

Dont really code on my lappy so I wouldn`t know but I like my room so 1920x1080 seems like the way to go.
Does the screen size affect how you see the resolution and stuff?

What is your price for the 1920x1080 Lenovo Y580?
Derp its not 1920x1080
Saw your thread about it

Yeap doubt that is the right price for the Full HD version. I have the normal Y580 btw and its awesome except for the screen. Although i have got it hooked up to a full hd display so its all good. Still looking around for a replacement screen for the Y580.

Check out my thread below for more info. :)

Unfortunately I`l be carrying it around so an external display isn`t an option
If I cant find a FHD version I`l probably go with the gigabyte which has a 1600x900 at least

though this dell

Might be a decent alternative
I`m busy comparing the 7670M to the 660M
Any reason why you didnt choose it?

Hehe yeah I know the feeling. But as I said in my thread, still cant beat the laptop for the price I got it for.

Hehe also carrying mine around, using it on campus.

Main reason was price. I was on a very tight budget, and for R8.5k the Y580 really seemed like the right choice. Plus there is a good chance I will be upgrading the screen in the near future.

The Dell Inspiron 15R SE is the best competition for the Y580 but costs quite a lot more.

Any other questions Ill be happy to answer :)

Does it have 2 Hdd slots? like 1 for ssd and 1 for hdd?
Doesn`t seem so due to 15" factor

and can you adjust to 1920x1080 with the black bars?
I have a tough choice now.

1366 660M w backlight
or
1600 640M

Don`t think the 640M has enough grunt for 1600 or 1920
Could just reduce graphics details
I`m sure its better than my 9800GT in my desktop

Btw I am using it for coding as well on campus. Visual studio, java, linux c++ etc etc. I have got no problem using it for work

The 660M GPU is awesome. Everything I have tried so far easily runs on Ultra. NFS MW on max is always between 40-50fps. Looking to borrow metro 2033 from a friend, think this will be its ultimate test :)

Hehe all comes down to what you want and your budget. I wanted a laptop that will outlast almost everything. Unless your looking at very high end Alienware or MSI lappy. In a year or two the Y580 will still be able to play games at very high settings. The Full HD display wont be able to help you then.

I could live with 1366 too though

Just to pour some petrol on your mind:
These guys have got a international $50 DHL shipping special running.....have a looksee at the Clevo Horize models.
You can drop some things to bring the price down some + once you register as non Australia it'll drop 10% GST off the price.

Clevo Horize P150EM is the 15inch model
Processor Intel i7-3630QM Quad Core Ivy Bridge Processor 2.4 - 3.4Ghz Turbo
RAM 16GB DDR3 1600Mhz System Memory
Hard Drive *PROMOTION 128GB mSATA*, DVD+/-RW Super Multi DVD Burner
Screen Size 15.6-inch FHD LED MATTE BACKLIT (1920x1080)
Graphics Card nVidia Geforce GTX670M 1.5GB GDDR5 Dedicated Graphics DX11

That spec above if you drop the ram to 8GB you can get with delivery to SA inc for AUD$1363 - R12,300ish but then you got VAT/Duty to add.
Drop the mSata out & it goes down another $100.

The W370ET is a fixed GPU 17inch but abit cheaper.

My HP has just started doing some mental **** tonight so there's 1 x P150EM heading my way - decided to go nVidia 680M cos AMD's Enduro is sounding like problem upon problem or i would have gone AMD 7970.

That Lenovo Y580 is still pretty decent for the money tho - I don't upgrade that often so i decided to take a look this way.

Just when I was happy with my Toyota you come and show me a BMW for a bit more
I`m wondering about shipping/duty/customs though.
I`ve got family in Australia so that might help.

I saw a dell for 1300 USD but it came out to 19k zar so I`m a bit wary of such prices

:D
Yes i was also quoted $600 shipping from a differant Clevo reseller - Eurocom
$50 for 4kg from Oz ain't gonna be beaten.
Maybe you can get it in as a gift from fam tho.
Mecer/Mustek are the SA Clevo agents but why they don't promote similiar buy options here i have no idea.STUPID.

Jack is the guy from LBO - you can see here he puts in some pretty good dedication to questions being fired about

Their the same as the Sager NP9150/NP9170 - thats just Sagers branding - same gear that's over on XoticPC.

They aren't totally unproblematic if you have a dig thru here tho - Particulaly enduro issues going on with the AMD GPU's where there is onboard + dedicated GPU AMD has been a problem stepping up with driver fixes.

I think the 660M is far more future proof. FAR MORE.

I currently own a Gigabyte laptop with a Core i5 and GT540M, I will be upgrading to the Y580 very soon. I want the extra graphics oomph and need more CPU.

Over the last 16 months the only complaint I have with the gigabyte is: "If you use the touchpad ever, you will probably be disappointed", everything else about the Gigabyte is great. At first I thought it was a Synaptic touchpad, but it's a "Sentelic" touchpad. Nice knock off naming there :P
