ANC secretary general Gwede Mantashe on Tuesday drew comparisons between the Nazis and Julius Malema's Economic Freedom Fighters.

"[Adolf] Hitler used brown shirts to mobilise people," he told reporters in Johannesburg.

"The Nazis didn't start by killing Jews, they started by making promises."

The EFF has started wearing red overalls and domestic worker attire in legislatures across the country. This resulted in clashes between the party and the Gauteng legislature last week after they were told the workwear which included the word "Asijiki" (we won't go back) on the back is not appropriate for the legislature.

Mantashe said the EFF was trying to sound revolutionary but its words were hollow.

The emerging trend was worrying and it could undermine democracy.

Mantashe was briefing media following an African National Congress national working committee meeting held on Monday.

I tend to agree with Mantashe to a degree.

I'm not sure I would compare Julius to Hitler, at least not in a direct fashion... I don't think Julius is as dangerous as Hitler was.. but he is still dangerous.

Hitler was also a softy to begin with

Well, the EFF (and for that matter the ANC) can rest assured, here is one man who will arm himself to the teeth and kill any and all EFF supporter on sight should we go this route. I will spend my life savings and all current income on paying terrorists to bring the most deadliest viruses into this country and release them in public as support to what I will be doing.

I do not take threats kindly.

Not really... yes he didn't actively do some of his most atrocious things early on, but the belief structure and attitude was there from the start.

I don't honestly think Malema is that evil. Politically he says what he thinks he needs to yes, but I don't think he has that kind of intent in his heart.

I think he is very "good" politician in that he knows the right things to say to rile up a crowd. I think he is more interested in feathering his own nest than in truly making changes.

I pray you are wrong but history repeats itself and this guy has man an axe to grind

My grade 9 stepdaughter is studying the leadup to wwII in history at the moment. There are a LOT of parallels between Julius and Hitler's early days. And she was pointing them out, not me...

In any event, Julius Malema strikes me as the kind of person who will start his career off with a bang. The moment he seizes control of this country, he will not be interested in inauguration ceremonies. He will likely have a R100m private party somewhere for his cadres, but immediately start implementing his ideas.

Malema will also not be the kind of leader that will tackle one problem at a time. I suspect his main first functions that he will try on his first day as leader will be the scrapping of the Constitution, the nationalization of mines and large corporations and immediate land reform in terms of taking ownership of all land in this country, which include private properties.

On his agenda will be the removal of Western corporations from this country, and then the actual redistribution of land, which will also include private properties. I see bank accounts frozen and funds redistributed.

Then I see a large number of laws changed or even scrapped from the books, and also probably, a single salary scale for everyone in this country.

Transformation will be hurried at an unbelievable rate, which in my opinion will be a one-sided 100% rate.

Then elections will be put to rest. I do not see Malema or the EFF ever giving up on power.

Hitler could read... and he could string a sentence together...
