Competition key to cutting telecoms costs

Which of the following do you think will improve telecoms the most?

I also strongly believe that strong competition is the best way to improve telecoms services. There is currently a fair amount of competition, but the following in the regulatory field can go a long way to bring far more and strong competition to the market:

--Local Loop Unbundling to bring more competition in the ADSL space
--Spectrum allocation to allow more players to roll out WiMax and other wireless offerings
 
um, why not the option for both? There should be liberal competition and controlled regulation.
 
I voted better regulation.
Cos at this time with the current setup - more competition will still be stifled without access to the local loop.

Even though I agree rpm, you must admit that 8 years down the line we're still seeing little to no competition. No REAL competition has presented itself thus far. Fair is an overstatement IMO
 
yes regulate telkom to the ground. But i cant see that happening due to the governments involvement. Look at the SABC, they misused the money they were given yet the govt. will still give them even more money.

we need to see something like LLU being implemented with a hard line tactic taken in order to ensure telkom actually carries out this task.

maybe even something like the competition commission or something investigatig the telecoms sector in SA.
 
You cant have one without the other.
 
So our power costs increase proportionally to our telecoms costs decreasing :confused: - more change than you originally started out with :erm:
 
Competition. Been there, done that, got the moth eaten t-shirt. Almost zero effect. Competition in SA is spelled C-A-R-T-E-L

Regulation. Never been tried before. Slash those interconnect rates. Slam open the local loop. Ban data bundle and out-of-bundle differentials. Make charging per gig punishable by death. And other sensible interventions...
 
Articles like this - about what industry experts think will bring down prices - is rather like asking the wolves what would be best for the lambs.

SA business loves "competition" - it means they can continue ripping your faces off while appearing to stand on the higher ground.

Competition will only start working once regulation is working properly, things that has failed in regulations are enormous, to list a few.
- Uncapped local I am sure should mean free local bandwidth, period, not "we can't stop you using so we charge you anyways."
- LLU without definite date of implementation?? that doesn't work.
- Infrastructure for telephone services was built with public money, so why are we paying line fees??? same goes for ADSL, we pay for installation so why monthly as well?
- proportional service between corporates and consumers, this one is aimed at neotel, its always easier to serve corporates but the greatest social economic change is when it reaches consumers.

just to name a few.
What we're seeing it tons of regulation in the wrong place and where needed, no regulation is in place.
 
Well I'm not going to vote because you need both. First of all there has to be regulation*50. After that is done a few ISPs would be perfect. Dosn't have to be 200 but 5 would be ok.

While competition works in 1st world countries, this is africa and other sectors where there is sufficient 'competition' .. sqat has happen and price fixing is the norm in SA. Since upping the numbers from 2 to 5 or more will not change a thing for at least 2-5yrs(you have to be realistic with LLU not even happening currently and they have a yr and 1/2 left).. i reckon regulation is the only way to force it down fast. heavy handed yes, but it will get results if regulator doesn't walk on egg shells when doing it which it has.

besides, every time a new operator is put in, they demand exclusivity rights period(in yrs) until next one is put in due to the cost of setting up + capital expenditure(esp with no LLU/draggin), i think neotel will whine if a new one is signed before end of year let alone more than one. cell companies too.
