Complaint against Vodacom

Sounds like Windows Updates might have played a role here. Also, just a correction on a previous post here: Vodacom's OOB rate is R2 per MB, not R1, so it is 10GB's worth of data.

Are you perhaps putting the sim into a phone and SMSing and/or calling, or have a family member/friend who might?

OOB rates are actually R1 or less on broadband standard contracts. It is R2 on top up/prepaid. OOB rates are the same as in-bundle rates for broadband advanced.

I doubt Windows updates played a significant role here as the bill would have been the same on most months. MS only releases updates for Windows once a month (99% of the time anyway) on the second Tuesday of each month. I know as I sunscribe to the official email from MS informing about updates. EDIT: If your updates are up-to-date, then the average updates per month (If any) are in the region of 30 to 50MB per month.

IMO I would guess that some sort of virus/spyware/trojan is mainly responsible. EDIT: So long as normal usage is assumed on the PC.

Briefly read through this,

download the usage stats on the website.

Might be interesting to see when it was used and if it was consistantly used over the month, or burst usage over a few days...

Could be torrents left running or software updates / windows updates etc...

You are very likely going to have to pay this bill though.
Is it a 3G dongle or a wireless type device that everyone can use?

Holy smoked balls on toasted pumpernickel :wtf: R20k?!

If I got a bill like that, it would be the day I jump off our balcony.

What happened to the good old days where an accounts had credit limits?

I am pretty sure arguing with VC, or any other service provider, is going to be useless. Is there at least something that can be done to "reduce" the bill? Or leaving it in your will for future generations to pay?

Hope you come right with this...

If you have a data bundle on your contract (excludes prepaid and topup) then the OOB rate is R1.00 per extra meg. If not or if you are on prepaid or topup, then it is R2.00 per extra meg.

Correct, Vodacom should have 'n credit limit for each customer based on affordability and make sure the customer does not exceed that limit.

Apparently there was some credit limit and once that was reached they put a hard lock on the SIM card. I am not sure what the credit limit was and incidentally, I find it very unfair that such a credit limit can be imposed without consulting the client and reaching consensus on an amount for the limit.

Blu check your contract, did you specify a limit?
I'm fighting the same fight at the moment with Vodacom. I agreed to a R100 limit on the data contract but have received 3 bills in excess of R500. Apparently Vodacom does not know that you have reached your threshold whilst downloading a big file. I.E. if you have 100mb data left and download a 300mb file you will pay for the 200mb out of bundle data. Still not happy with the answer seeing that they have a resposibility according to contract...

All contracts have the limit. You probably signed for it. Problem is getting to 20K can happen overnight and their limits apparently don't update that often on contract. Vodacom do expect contract customers to run up these bills so they can profit. There is no reason why they should have to charge you 2/mb. They could just charge you at the 2gb a month rate, but they don't.

Blu with the vodacom datacards, aka dongle, you should've run through a Vodafone Mobile install. If that's the case, it has a usage tracker, which if I recall, allows you to view 3 months worth of data 'history'. Perhaps use that as a guage whether the bill seems reasonable or not?

Why not just go for 8ta 10GB contract R199.

When you reach your cap they cut you off. No shock at the end of the month.

Jannie keeps telling us they're not out to screw us yet they have the R2/Mb and no hard cap. I run the 2G special with a cap of R50.

What's also shocking is that you pay R1500 every month for around 3GB of data.
You could have got over 60GB from 8ta with that. If you really have to use Vodacom (no coverage from other ISP's) then get a topup contract or go prepaid. Buy additional bundles if you hit the cap. Don't ever use OOB data. You can easily save R1000 pm.

This sounds unbelievable. With Vodaom I had a 2.5GB contract for somethiing like R400 per month. If 8ta charges R200 for 10GB, how come they are not getting all of SA to sign up with them???????
