Complaint against Vodacom

8ta pops up with a screen that asks you for permission to go OOB - a simple solution for making sure that the customer is aware of what is happening.

An honest question; when the 8ta screen pops up and you were busy with a download,; what happens to the download session?

What I mean is I purchase a bundle as I did now, 1 gig lets say. I pay lets say R250
Now I go over that bundle, why do the networks charge more when I go over? Why not charge the same price?
The only reason can be that they want us to go over so we can be raped

You would be charged the same rate OOB if you had selected Broadband Advanced when you bought the bundle. Apart from the charges the only other difference between Broadband Advanced and Broadband Standard is the sizes of the data bundkes available to you.

As I understand it, the bundles sizes offered on Broadband Advanced are aimed at those customers who tend to stray into the OOB playing field, hence the charges are the same in bundle as they are out of bundle.

Exactly, which is bloody madness. Why if they charge you say 10 cents per MB on a bundle, not charge you the same OOB?
Its highway robbery

Jannie, why don't you simply switch over to pre-paid the moment you go OOB? Or contractually allow a 10% over-allowance before either blocking or switching to pre-paid
Called TopUp. I intentionally made the 1,2 and 3GB promos available on TopUp to help with this.
There are so many ways to prevent OOB on a system level it is difficult not to come to the conclusion that the service providers are deliberately feeding the shark...
And most of these are in place. You get notifications (delayed on contract - busy fixing it), we put a system in place if you need to get them on your mobile and not the modem or router (called Alternate Number) and we put a soft-lock in place called Call Limit Lock.

So it's all there.

If a subscriber did all the above (as in the welcome letters they get) and they still get bill-shock, I'll sort it. AS soon as blu mal me, I can check where the process failed for her.

So, for the record, I don't want sub to run up silly bills. So the tools are there, we try and educate people to use them, but clearly it fails for some.

You must also remember, I have around 12 million data users. You don't see posts here from 11 999 990 saying they did not get bill shock. By definition, you only going to see the posts from those that got stung. Now it's not good that a single person gets a higher bill than desired but we cannot put blanket rules in place. So it's up to each sub.

Jannie please explain it again for me, I never used to purchase data so its new to me.

So what you are saying, if I buy a bundle say 1 gig Advanced costs me lets say 10cents per MB
I then go over that gig, I am then charged 10c per MB no matter how much I go over the original bundle?

That is correct, but Advanced is more expensive, so you pay for the privilege.

Advanced would therefore typically not be necessary on prepaid (assuming no airtime lying around), but it could be a life-saver if you have activated a data bundle on an open-ended contract (as most are).

Yup

Jannie, is it possible to set your internet to just stop when going over your bundle?
Or why not just point the user to your website at least, where the user has to click "OK" to continue surfing?

because if vodacom can't do that, you have to agree that the system is designed to cash in from general users deliberately.

Yup
For the validity period of the bundle (end of following month), of course.

How much more? Why do you have to pay extra for that "privilege" ?
It just does not make sense to me.
So you have to pay extra for "insurance" against being charged this mad amount that you should not be charged in the first place

Now you talking, same as Mweb for eg.

It's possible today on prepaid and TopUp but not (yet) on Contract.

Jannie can probably answer that. IIRC, he's had electricity bills higher than OP's data bill.

I do know that Eskom will send you a bill the following month with a penalty charge for every half-hour your power factor dips below 0.96.

He runs a factory at his house?

I personally recommended the mofaya deal last year to two of my friends. Both are tech savvy, knowing what a byte and a bundle is. But despite ALTNUM being active, and he gets the sms's, within about 2 hours he went over by 2 GB - turned out his wife synched a 2 GB mailbox and forgot to check "headers only". So it's the real time notification that's lacking. He coughed up the R2000 but he's no longer a Vodacom customer. He sees it as too much risk.

I've told him about advanced and now topup for mofaya, but he's finished with Vodacom. If only mofaya was released last year on topup, he would have saved R2000. And I wouldn't feel like an a-hole recommending Vodacom to him.

That R2000 could have been spent on the hundred odd bucks per month that you pay more for ADSL, and the peace of mind that goes with it.

Can you not use 8ta?
