Hi All

I'm running Kubuntu 9.10, my initial set up is one without a graphics card. If I put a graphics card in my box, would i have to do any additional installing or will Kubuntu just pick up the graphics card and use it?

I know its a complete noob question but i have to ask.

Thanks

Ok virst of all, its a newb ( newbie ) question, not a noob ( idiot ) question

Now to your question :
only if its a Nvidia card and you wanna play games/HD Videos with it....

For your sake I really do hope its a recent ati card. Preferably not older than 2 years. ATI cards (the older ones) are a royal pain in the ass to get going properly on Linux ime. Best bet would be to get the most recent linux based driver from the ATI vendor and install it. Failing that you could try the open source ati drivers found in Synaptic Package manager. But if you really want to save yourself the mission then just get a nvidia card, they work pretty flawlessly under Linux.

Good luck!

even if it does pick it up, its always a good idea to get the latest drivers and reinstall them...

Put it in, boot up your Karmic, activate your card, reboot your PC and you should be set.

KMenu->Applications->System->Hardware Drivers Manager - Activate your card.

You can do that, but I always reckon its better to get the very latest official driver from the manufacturers site and install it manually. To the OP, once you have the card there's ahandy bit of software called 'nvidia-settings' that will help you tweak some stuff.
