Guys

I am a typical end user of a PC so I do not know where to start looking !

We are doing community development work with a group of youth in a rural town. They are trying to organise themselves, get an office, etc.

One of the guys gave us R 5 000 - in cash, nogal - and asked us to buy him a computer for their office.

Can you get anything for that price and where? Laptop / desktop with what kinds of trimmings?

Thanks :D

You can get a pretty decent setup with 5g. If you were in KZN, I'd recommend PC Zone. Actually, my current PC only cost about that last year so it must be cheaper now.

Dual Core 2.8ghz
2GB Ram
120GB HDD
2 x DVD-RW
400W PSU
Chaintech 7600GT

Someone here is bound to help you anyway :D

They're in Jhb.

Power Pro IV PC (Black System)
Intel Core2 Duo 2.2Ghz E4500 CPU
2GB DDR2 RAM
160GB SATA II 7200RPM HDD
No SDD
Onboard Sound w/ speakers & VGA
Executive Mini Tower Case
DVD Writer 20/12x Drive Dual Layer
6x USB; 1 x Serial,1x Parallel
17" Samsung LCD Monitor
Keyboard + Optical Mouse
One Year Warranty

For R 4,558.86.

Maybe put the rest of the R5k towards getting a 19" LCD. :)

Or use the R400 for shipping ;) That seems like the best system Postman Pot ;) Remember, you have to buy an Operating System too, that's another R800

I had 5k cash stolen the other day, please ask him about it :D

Device in Midrand have Dell P4 machines - ex Sanlam I believe.
With VAT they are around 2K and include Windows XP License, 512MB RAM, 40GB HD, Mouse and Keyboard.
You need to add optical drive and screen.
They should sort you for under 3K if you are not after LCD screen.
The current ones are 2.8GHz machines with SATA HD and DDR2 RAM by the way.

I have gone this route instead of digging in old cr@p stuff that people want to upgrade.

Purchase the EEE PC from Asus (http://eeepc.asus.com/global/)... they go for under R3000 and is a fully functional laptop. You can keep it vanilla or install Edubuntu onto it: http://www.edubuntu.org/ .. if its for a school, or ubuntu if its for a normal office. The nice thing about laptops like these Asus EEEPC`s, is they can be locked away at night in a walk in safe, or a hardend room.

What is the PC going to be used for? Does it need to be portable or locked away somewhere safe at night or something?

Do you need a printer or anything else like that? R5k should still get you a long way but we need to know what your needs are.

Not my needs, but his needs ;)

He said - and I quote his SMS to me, since I know jack**** about PCs:

"Please check that it's a dvd rom and 100 or above hdd."

This is not a bad idea and will leave a lot of cash over. For the full 5k though you can get something like this:

Decent motherboard for R518, with onboard gfx if needed

AMD 4200+ dual core processor for R656

1Gb DDR2 800 RAM for R250

Isonic Case with 400W PSU for R220 (currently out of stock at Prophecy...)

250GB SATA HDD for R656

LG DVD-writer/reader for R288

That comes to R2588.

You would still need a monitor and a mouse...But you can get quite a nice screen with the cash that is left over...Like this 19" Samsung LCD here:http://www.prophecy.co.za/samsung-wide-920nw-black-p-22053.html

R5000 will buy you a lot, especially if it's not for hardware-intensive graphics.

Generic Chassis with 300W power supply: R250-00
Intel BLKDG31PR "Pearl Creek" Motherboard: R740-00
Intel Core 2 Duo E4500 BX80557E4500 2.2GHz : R1230-00
2 x 1024MB DDR2-800 DIMMS: 2 x R290-00 = R580-00
Maxtor 250GB SATA-II Hard Drive: R690-00
Samsung 20x DVD+/-RW: R240-00

This comes to R3730-00

The motherboard has Intel G3100 onboard graphics, and it should be noted that sometimes one can find bundled Intel deals (i.e. motherboard and processor sold as one for a lower price)

Oh, Intel processors carry a 3-year warranty, the RAM carries a lifetime warranty, the Maxtor hard drive carries (I think) 3 year warranty (if it's not 3 years, then it's 5 years: Seagate manufactures them). The rest carries one year (except the PSU, which is 3 months).

Ya, onboard gfx should be fine. Evn if it isn't with the R2500 left over from my quote you can easily buy a decent screen, mouse and low-end graphics card. :)

My apologies: RAM is R240-00 for 1024MB DDR2-800 with lifetime warranty

Guys im selling a BRAND NEW msi Socket 939 Main bored (K8T neo2) for only R600

OK... good board... where we gonna find Socket 939 CPU's?
