Computer resellers you trust

Anybody bought a computer workstation (computer desk with keyboard tray, etc) recently? Where would be the best place to get one of those? I've got a relatively good offer for R900 but its a little steep, i think, for a presswood workstation.

Any furniture places that sell good quality ones that do not require a kidney as a deposit?

I did find the "no followup" from Computersonly strange, as I never had that experience with them, so I queried it. Their response :

I have gone through all my quotes but did not receive anything from a Martin, And I have gotten back to all the people that has requested a quote from me as we treat every inquiry as important.

Sometimes we don’t get the mails and its easy to just slam a company on the net.

Sometimes what happens aswell is that our quotes is send as a gif format and certain requests gets denied by the customer’s server.

I just bought some components from a reseller called Infinety . Gave me some very good prices.

If you order, let him know that you found out about him from the forums..

I'm sorry Luke but that's simply not the truth. Someone from Computersonly finally phoned me about two hours ago apologising for only responding today. Also I wasn't 'slamming' them in any way as they claim. My previous post simply related my experience with various companies I requested quotes from.

There's also http://www.take2.co.za of course. Although they seem to be alot better geared towards DVD/Software/Music/Books rather than Hardware. They do have a huge collection of hardware but i've found it hard to find stuff [search feature is a bit buggy, either get nothing or too many results ] and alot of the hardware i'm usually interested in are either "neglected" or "outdated" .

I.e. their laptop collection is absurd, i cant' believe they still have it up , if someone know someone there please tell them to remove/fix those 1.7 Ghz Compaqs they're selling for R31k ...looks bad [especially if that is where you look first].

I have ordered from them before, and haven't had problems with them. Although i use them because they are located in Cape Town , which means i can pick up my stuff personally instead of having it shipped. I will use them again, depending on what i need, they have the best software [games/dvd] prices i've seen , and their hardware prices match rectron/sahara very closely .

As for http://www.sybaritic.co.za , ordered a full PC [xcube] from Sybaritic worth R5+ plus, which they had to assemble for me [CPU+memory etc], i received it all from Johburg 2 days after i paid. Couldn't ask for better service there, the only thing that bothered me was the Credit Card payment Policy they have [which is another 6% on top of the final cost] ....which might make it better to do a bank transfer into their account but is a schlep to do [the first time anyway :P].

yup. the banks charge the reseller, in fact any retailer a percentage of the turnover they put through the card machine so if a place has great cash prices, they will invariably add the loss for accepting a credit card or debit card. told you SA banks suck.
 
I don't think that retailers are allowed to do this according to their agreements with the banks/credit card co's. They can, however, offer a cash discount if you don't use a credit card.

edit: Also 6% seems really expensive.
 
Check out Centurion Technologies (CenTech) and PC Palace in Centurion (www.pcpalace.co.za).

I've bought from both, although I almost always go with CenTech because their prices are generally quite a bit lower than other retail places. Plus you can haggle a bit with them as well if you really want to :D

BTW Sybaritic may have decent prices, but WHAT is up with the website thing? they really have done the most awful sites (under customers) :eek:

Well not sure if they are levying the charge or the company handling the cc payments, but to quote from their site:

How does Thirt work? When you are about to complete your order, you have the option of selecting Thirt Escrow Services as your payment option. Once we have received your order and have confirmed availability, we will instruct Thirt to accept your payment on our behalf.

All credit card transactions (or transactions processed via Thirt) will incur an additional surcharge (minimum of R20 or 6% plus VAT on the charge). We apologise for any inconvenience this may cause.

In in the end, yes 6% is alot, i have always opted out and went the bank deposit route, which works out cheaper. [Even though i prefer CC purchases]

ah okay. Thirt is an escrow service. They hold the funds on the seller's behalf until such time as the buyer confirms delivery. It is a good way of guaranteeing an honest transaction when the 2 parties don't know each other...especially for online auctions etc.
 
A friend at ABSA told me that they can revoke the persons credit card facilities as it is illegal, as a credit card is cash
 
Servers

If you're in anywhere in South Africa, then the best man to talk to for servers (for your lower end stuff) is Henry from Server Supplies. He gives excellent service, and Imports major components and servers himself. He can pretty much undercut some of the Dealerships comfortably. They do Desktops and components as well - and he does give guarantees with everything (erm, except MS Software doesn't carry guarantees - so almost everything).
 
I am looking at purchasing a laptop - are there any recommended companies here? Did buy an Acer Travelmate beginning of last year at The Notebook Company in Pretoria, were quite satisfied. Just thought I'd ask!

Need a 'just-above-entry-level', that is, Centrino processor, good screen, 60GB, 512MB RAM, WiFi. No need for DVD writer, graphics processors etc.

No dealer or reseller I came across can beat Makro's laptop prices at the moment. They sell Fujitsu-Siemens laptops. Check out their website at www.makro.co.za
