Hi folks

We would like to give you an opportunity to put a question/s to this year’s conference speakers. We will do our best to field as many of these questions as time allows.

Please try to structure the questions in a constructive way. For example: It is much better to ask “Are you planning any new price structures in future” than “Why is your out of bundle rates so high”.

Please clearly state which speaker the question is aimed at and then give the question.

Example:

Pieter Uys, Vodacom
Q: How far is Vodacom with its planned fibre rollout?

Conference speakers:

Pieter Uys & Wally Beelders - Vodacom

Douglas Reed - Vox Telecom

Richard Came - Dark Fibre Africa

Angus Hay - Neotel

Brian Seligmann - MTN

Brian Herlihy - SEACOM

Richard Fyffe - MultiChoice

Dominic Cull - Ellipsis Regulatory Affairs

Mike Vos -, Telkom

Roelf Diedericks - Neology

Steve Briggs - iBurst

At Angus Hay - Chief Technology Officer, Neotel

  1. When is coverage in Cape Town going to be expanded?
  2. Which areas in Cape Town are looking at being covered next?
  3. Can we have pre-paid on Neoflex? If yes, when? If no, why?

At Brian Herlihy - President, SEACOM and Richard Came - Director, Dark Fibre Africa.

  • Can I, as someone who comes from a previously disadvantaged background, please have either a landing station (am situated along the coast) at my house and the fibre to go along with it? ;) :D

disclaimer: You can't blame an oke for trying :D

Another one for Angus from Neotel.

Why does Neotel not resell bandwidth for ADSL to ISP's that are out there already?

EDIT:

I'd also like to refer back to this post, where I posted a few questions to the Neotel Rep, but never got feedback on it.
It's more or less in line with the original question posed here.

Neotel: How far are plans for increasing coverage in Durban? Particularly the Upper Highway area?

Telkom: Are there any price changes or changes in your bandwidth allocation planned for the near future?

MTN/Vodacom:
How soon can we expect data prices to drop after the arrival of Seacom? And to what extent are prices expected to drop?

MTN:
In the foreseeable future will any changes be made to top up packages to allow users to convert the included air time into data bundles?

Telkom:
You are joking in your 2010 ads when you mention that Telkom is "bringing us World Class services", right?

Richard Fyffe - MultiChoice
Is there any expectation that consumer charges for DSTV will fall in the short term?

Mike Vos -, Telkom

Does TELKOM expect that ADSL speeds will improve in the near future ie from 4 to 8 Mbps?

Hi folks

I deleted a few posts: Can you please only post the questions here (no discussions)...will make it easier for us to compile the questions for the conference.

@Angus Hay - Neotel, can we expect fixed line adsl or fibre from Neotel in the future for private individuals (home users), if so under what time frame?

@Richard Fyffe - MultiChoice, why does multichoice advertise so much in light of it being a paid subscription service?

@Richard Came - Dark Fibre Africa- When are they expecting to lay Fibre in Durban and Capetown and will they speed up the possess before the seacom cable lands?

@Angus Hay - Neotel- Are we going to see some updates and more reliable information about the roll out of coverage since that is the major factor that most people are waiting for.

@Steve Briggs - iBurst- The 40meg package at who is this aimed? Have u ever tried it yourself?

@telkom: How is the LL Unbundling process progressing? How many companies have access to the exhanges, or have already installed their own equipment? If none, when will they be able to have access or install? Please be specific like X in Cape Town, Y in Joburg, and so on for the major metropolitan areas.

@Angus Hay, Neotel . . . Have you heard of Port Elizabeth? When is the rollout going to extend to areas?

:o

@Brian Herlihy - SEACOM: Do you think we will see a move of hosting content to the UK after SEACOM lands? International bandwidth pricing may be lower than local bandwidth.

@Brian Seligmann, MTN: How much of your network is HSDPA 3.6 and/or HSDPA 7.2 Mbps enabled?

@Dominic Cull - Ellipsis Regulatory Affairs: Can all VANS get I-ECNS liceses. Are there any additional obligations when you get an I-ECNS license?

@Douglas Reed Chief Executive Officer, Vox Telecom: Was it not irresponsible and foolish to invest such a large amount of money with Dealstream, a company that had never ever issued audited financial statements? Should heads not have rolled at Vox?

Neotel
What are your coverage plans for Cape Town?

MTN & Vodacom
Why is it that there is no visible competition when it comes to pricing on your mobile data services?

Vox, MTN, Vodacom, iBurst, Neotel
Should ISPs not be doing a lot more to rally against incumerent's like Telkom and stand up against the DoC's meddling? Surely they have more clout and financial resources than the average consumer? VANS ruling is a good example.

Telkom
We have been promised better service delivery for your ADSL help desk, this is clearly not happening. When will this be resolved?
Should Telkom not be investing more effort into enabling exchanges for ADSL and speeding up installations than starting a (limited coverage) mobile data service?

Brian Herlihy (SEACOM) / Mike Vos (Telkom)
Q: How will the new International Broadband (SEACOM) help us overcome the local Telkom bottleneck? Is local infrastructure being upgraded?

Angus Hay, Neotel
Q: The coverage in Durban seems quite limited/sparse - any plans to extend/improve coverage? If yes then when?

WiMax rollout

To:
Steve Briggs - iBurst
Pieter Uys & Wally Beelders - Vodacom

(1) Will Vodacom and Iburst set prices for services offered over WiMax together? Will they be presenting one product or will the two service providers compete? Is the structure of the WiMax rollout and product offerings going to take the form of a Joint Venture?

(2) To what extent will Vodacom / Iburst offer consumers mobile telephone handsets that are capable of using WiMax? What WiMax products will be offered to consumers? Will data prices on a WiMax based consumer product be priced lower than 3G? Do Vodacom / Iburst anticipate that other operators who receive WiMax spectrum will roll out handset based products for consumers?

Altech ruling on self-provisioning and VANS infrastructure rollout

To:
Roelf Diedericks - Neology
Douglas Reed - Vox Telecom
Richard Fyffe - MultiChoice

Now that all of the VANS providers are allowed to self-provide their infrastructure as a consequence of the Altech litigation, to what extent will you roll out your own network infrastructure, or use that of Dark Fibre Africa? What would your rollout of infrastructure, if any, consist of? For example, which wireless technologies would you use, and what coverage do you expect to achieve in the coming years? Where, if anywhere, would you roll out optical fibre? Where and to what extent will you continue to rely on Telkom infrastructure?

To:
Richard Came - Dark Fibre Africa

To what extent do you expect the VANS to use DFA and to what extent do you think they will self-provide? What is DFA's coverage likely to be in the next few years?

The biggest barrier to the growth of the local internet industry is the exorbitant bandwidth costs associated with local website hosting. It is particularly crippling to the growth of rich, innovative local content and web 2.0 development. As things stand, website success spells instant financial disaster for local developers.

When will there be relief? When will the bandwdith costs of running a local website become merely a minor consideration as it is in most overseas markets?

Telkom and IPTV

To:
Mike Vos, Telkom

To what extent does Telkom intend to offer its forthcoming broadcasting services (TV) over its fixed line network? Does Telkom intend rolling out fibre to the home in order to offer IPTV, or will Telkom be able to offer IPTV over new/existing ADSL/leased line copper last mile infrastructure? Or will Telkom use existing satellite services (through DSTV), or use Sentech's signalling network, or build a separate wireless network for its broadcasting services offering? How important is broadcasting services to the overall Telkom strategy over the forthcoming years, and how has this changed since Telkom's initial bid for a broadcasting licence?

To:
Richard Fyffe - MultiChoice

To what extent do you see Telkom / other VANS rolling out fixed line or wireless telecommunications infrastructure (such as WiMax, LTE, WiFi, Fibre or Copper) that could be used for IPTV services in competition with Multichoice's satellite service? To what extent are new broadcasters (such as Telkom) likely to enter using fixed line or wireless telecommunications infrastructure?
