Hi folks

AS you know our yearly broadband conference will take place on Tuesday and we would like to give forumites a chance to ask any of the speakers at the event. WE have very limited time and there will not be an official Q&A session after each presentation, but we will however select one or two questions from here which we will ask…

So if you would like to ask any of the presenters a question, please post it here and we will try to include it in the event. Please clearly indicate the speaker and the question you would like to ask.

Also please note that Telkom Media is a completely separate company from Telkom (like Vodacom) and they can therefore not answer any questions related to Telkom.

Speakers:

  • Ermano Quartero, Vodacom
  • Douglas Reed, Vox Telecom
  • Brian Seligman, MTN
  • Dr. Angus Hay, Neotel
  • Roelf Diedericks, Neology
  • Stafford Massie, Google SA
  • Alan Bacher, Internet Solutions
  • Antony McKechnie, iBurst
  • Rikus Matthyser, Telkom Media

Damn... wanted to get in a nasty question about Telkoms chinese maths.. :p

In all honesty, to Telkom Media : Do they believe Telkom will be able to provide them the infrastructure to roll out IPTV to a sizeable enough portion of the market, and at a reasonable price.

To Telkom Media: Do they feel that the current price of broadband in SA will allow them to make reasonable inroads into the market?
To Neotel: When exactly is early 2008 for us exploited consumers?

Question for Telkom (suspect Rikus will know), Vodacom, Neotel & MTN:

We've all been hearing a lot about fiber networks being installed, some quote as little as 10Km's and others as much as 170 000 Km's.

Can each respondent please explain how this is measured and where these fibers run?
Specifically for Neotel: How much fiber you have access to, is from the original Transtel & Eskom networks and how much have you installed yourself and where? How is Infraco involved, if at all, in your fiber backbone?

To iBurst: iBurst's market position in the last year has gone from one of relative strength, to the current position where you are now one of the most expensive (and dare I say helpless, thanks largely to the support and accounts departments) providers (certainly per GB, if not overall). What plans are in place to rectify this?

Rikus Matthyser, Telkom Media-

A very obvious question, how exactly do they plan to roll out IPTV given the current exhorbitant costs of 'bandwidth'? Is there going to be a two tier system where internet bandwidth is priced differently to the bandwidth used for IPTV?

Haven't phrased it very well, so if someone wants to rephrase...

Neotel: Given the recent anouncement that Neotel has obtained full access to the SAT-3 cable, how will end-users be affected by this? When can we expect to see any changes?

Telkom Media: Do you think that IPTV is excluded from Telkom's so called 'fair use policy?'

Vodacom, MTN : Do you think that, given the price for a single SMS on a standard prepaid account, an SMS is a smart way of sending a miniscule amount of data? What is the company's profit margin on an SMS?

To Roelf Diedericks, Neology

Some of Neology's City of Joburg test plans include:

demonstrating a Metropolitan Ethernet Core, Fibre to the premises, Broadband over Powerline, WiMAX, and WiFi technologies.

Which technology would Neology be investing their resources in for the future rollout of broadband?

Also, are Neology looking at working with municipal contracts or are they going to offer service in the consumer market?

To Rikus Matthyser, Telkom Media:

If you are indeed a separate company from Telkom, why in the world did you select a name associated with so much consumer antagonism? Wouldn't a fresh brand have overcome the well established Telkom obstruction in most minds?

>A question for Rikus Matthyser, Telkom Media: what is the registered business address for the company he represents, and who runs the company, i.e. CEO etc?<

Question seconded.....;)
