i an going to build a new pc. I will have:
1 sapphire hd6950,
8gb ddr3 1333,
msi x58 pro mobo,
i7 950 3.06ghz cpu
4 Zalman ZM-F3BL 120mm LED Case Fan - Red
Aerocool Touch Panel 2000
coolermaster xpredator gaming case

How powerful psu will i need if i have 1 sapphire hd6950 and how powerful psu will i need for 2 hd6950 and what psu do you recommend that has the graphic card plug

I would suggest that you get a decent 750W PSU: Corsair AX/HX or Seasonic X.
If you want the PSU to run slightly cooler and more silent, and perhaps even more efficient, then perhaps go for the 850W one instead.

Why do you have 8GB of RAM and not 6 or 12GB?

KhoisanX: he probably had the i7 950 long before the SB stuff was available? IIRC this isn't the case actually :(

a 650W PSU would be fine.
Corsair is a good brand, as many have mentioned.

Personally, I haven't had problems with Coolermaster in past or present;

How do they say?
Sometimes you get lucky and sometimes you don't.
And that can swing both ways with any item from any brand.

±R700 Corsair CX600 , Eps12V , ATX 12V V2.3 - 600w ( 12v : 480w ) , 24pin ( 4pin detachable ) , with active-PFC , 2x8pin (2+6) PCI-E power , 1x 120mm thermal controled fan , 6x SATA - 3 years warranty - no power cord

Why get an i7-950 when you can get a nice, shiny, brand new and much faster Sandybridge i7-2600?

SB can't run two gfx cards at 16x/16x

For 1 card get a Corsair 650watt. For two get a Corsair 850watt.

It's really pushing it with the CX600, seeing that it can only deliver 480W on the +12V rail.
The i7 950 is rated at 130W TDP, and the HD 6950 is rated 200W TDP - and this is before you unlock it to the HD 6970, which is rated at 250W TDP.

So if you do get the CX600, I won't advise that you unlock the HD 6950's to the 6970's or overclock your CPU/GFX cards.

It's more than enough, promise. :)

An 80+ 650W will cope fine with that setup, like the Corsair TX or HX650

PostmanPot: I'm not sure sure that the CX600 is enough. My i7 940 @ 3.95GHz + 2x GTX 460's @ 878MHz consumed ~490W (540W from AC input).
So ja, the CX600 would be good enough if you're not overclocking, but it will run fairly hot and be fairly loud as well if it's running at full load.

I don't think it'll be anywhere near full load tbh. You can also check the PSU calculator, after I used it it shot out an estimate of less than 400watts.

Simply cannot use your SLI rig as a comparison. :)

This is what the PSU Calculator lite gives me:
System Type: 1 physical CPU
Motherboard: Regular - Desktop
CPU: Intel Core i7-950 3060 MHz Bloomfield
CPU Utilization (TDP): 90% TDP

RAM: 3 Sticks DDR3 SDRAM
Video Card: AMD Radeon HD 6950
Video Type: Crossfire

High rpm SATA: 1 HDD
DVD-RW/DVD+RW Drive: 1 Drive
Keyboard and mouse: Yes

System Load: 90 %

Capacitor Aging (+ W %): 15 %

Minimum PSU Wattage: 529 Watts
Recommended Wattage: 579 Watts

Now that is without even overclocking at all. If you decide to unlock the HD 6950's to 6970's then the Recommended Wattage is above 700W.

So I'm staying with my recommendation that the CX600 is fine if you're not going to overclock, otherwise you should get a better/bigger PSU.

I was accounting for a single HD6950. :p Which even the Corsair CX500 would power quite nicely.

For Xfire, ±700watt. Corsair HX650 or TX750. :)

Ah OK PostmanPot. I didn't realize you were speaking about 1x HD 6950 the whole time ;)

the corsair CX500 is a 500w psu. Can it support 1 hd6950 and does it have the plugs for the card?
