Confusing WebAfrica post about 10Mbps speeds

I Don't get it what has line speed got to do with Web Africa anyway thats a Telkom thing and nothing to do with them.

You Paying per gig anyway so it does not matter what your line speed is. Are they trying to say that other ISP's we will be charging more per gig of data if Telkom line speed goes up?

Strange

Exactly? How can WA be the first... I see the "Titan Special" page is redirecting to webafrica.co.za but on the page all the packages say Up to 10Mbps... but that makes no sense cos if im paying for 25gig i should get the 25gig at any speed I can according to my line, which is governed by Telkom...

Well time is money. Say you have a big file to download. If on a 10mb connection it only takes half as long as it takes on a 4mb connection - you're getting value from the service. It's the same with express trains or air liners. You can pay less to stop at Colombo between Abu Dhabi and Singapore or pay a little more and fly direct in less time.

When? How? Cost? Will 4Mbps become 10Mbps?

They seem to be pre-empting the Telkom upgrade in June... would love to apply at WA for a 10mbps service to be activated from tomorrow - knowing that my exchange's DSLAM cannot provide 10mbps!!!

Ok yes you make a valid point but I still dont see how WA can say "we are the first with 10Mbps" when 10Mbps lines aren't even available... Whats next? Mweb come in and say "First with 20Mbps" meanwhile you cant get the line to do the speed... UNLESS WebAfrica have somehow already upgraded their lines to 10Mbps by some special deal with Telkom but I doubt they would be quiet about something like that... Ill check my line when I get home as Ive been upgraded to the Titan 2 package as of this morning.

Impossible.

Impossible.

I think so too... I still think its a bit shady for them to say they are offering "Up to 10Mbps" Accounts when nobody has the line speed to hit it... Like I said thats the same as if I opened an ISP with first ever in SA , accounts allowing up to 1000Mbps.

On the uncapped packaged you pay different prices for say 4mbit and 8mbit. WA doesn't distinguish and wants to point that out. Not that it really matters on anything capped.

Thats because you can get twice the amount of data from a 8Mbps account than with a 4Mbps account... These accounts on the Titan Packages are all fixed size packages.

It's better that way. When Telkom do upgrade the line speeds for all users there will be ISPs lagging behind with product descriptions like "unlimited 384k DSL" when 384k may be changed to 512k.

I think it means that Telkom will upgrade our line speeds for free :) And WA must be 100% certain of this already.

You've got it wrong though... If you paying for Unlimited 384k and you've got a 4meg line then you're gonna get 384Kbps speeds, they dont have to magically upgrade it to 512kbps or 4Mbps just because you got a line upgrade...

How can you offer a 10Mbps Account when there is no 10Mbps Line to handle it.

I know. Hence my comment "Not that it really matters on anything capped."

I think this should be reported to the ASA. Let me explain:

According to my router stats it says that my Line has a Attainable Rate (Kbps): 10205 down and 986 up.

This is so misleading cause Webafrica creates the perception that I will be able to get that speeds. But telkom has not upped the speeds yet. So how can Webafrica even say Up to 10Mbit cause it WILL be limited to 4096k cause the 10Mbit profile gets activated manually and not automatically by Telkom system.....

To be fair and honest, I dont think this should be a big deal and shouldnt be made an issue. I personally think that Web Africa are just preparing themselves for the 10mb upgrades. They say "Up to 10mbs", which mean that they are expecting telkom to upgrade us to 10mb and are advertising that their accounts/lines will be able to run on 10mb when it is launched.

Its false advertising.... Point. They say a SA first. Yet. 1. They have no control over the speeds. 2. 90% of all capped accounts are not limited and performs according to line speed.

surely they should be advertising what the product can do today otherwise as posted above some ISP can claim 20Mbps thinking that someday in the future it will be supported.
