Hi,

I just got a 3g hsdpa Samsung u700 and it's very nice!

I am trying to connect with the new phone, via bluetooth, but everytime I try to I get to the "registering computer on network" and then get kicked off with a 619 error.

I am now back on my old phone, only using gprs and can connect just fine so it must something I am doing wrong. Am I missing something...

Here are the details:

1. Setup a manual connection
2. Phone is using automatic network settings
3. The APN details are in the phone, vodacom, internet somthing like gprs.internet
4. Do I have to create another connection type in there to specify 3g/hsdpa?
5. Have a firewall it's Comodo but it doesn't bother this connection...
6. Do i have to set this phone up as a broadband connection?
7. I have "automatically detect settings" in the IP settings box thingy...

What else?

I so want to go at high speed...

Please help! Thanks!

Try with a USB cable first. For a lot of phones this is easier to set up and a faster transfer rate is achieved.

I'll answer my own question...

I eventually just called 155 and got this answer which fixed the problem.

You have to dial these numbers:

*99***1# or *99**1*1# - for me the second one worked.

Then you have to go into your control panel, click on Phone and Modem Options, choose the modems tab, select the modem you are using from the list, click properties, choose the advanced tab and insert the following into the extra settings for initialization commands.

at+cgdcont=1,"IP","internet"

Connect and whoop there it is! The dude on the phone with me last night at midnight, while I was drunk was very helpful! I think his name was Jim...

Hi there ..

I also got same phone - and i can connect fine - only thing is it only connects at 230k - i even tried vodafone mobile software and it still only wants to connect at a GPRS speed.

what speed does yours connect at??

Hi Ash, I am not sure, I will check tonight but I only get Edge at best in my area so I don't know if that will help you.

Check back later for more...

You could have installed the software, and used the USB Cable. In the software theres a Internet Connection Wizard, which sets up the settings automatically(the same for bluetooth). It wouldve saved you the call to 155.

I have just ended my "relationship" with Hellburst and I have been using the U700 as a modem for the past two weeks without any problems.

I connect using the provided software and the USB cable.

It always connects at 3G (230.4 kbps) speeds, yet the download speeds often exceed that of 3G. The icon on the phone's display alternates between 3G and HSDPA.

I have sent a PM to vodacom3g to enquire about this and I'm still waiting for a reply.

BTW, I am about 150m from the nearest cell tower, so signal strength is no problem. I have also not had any disconnects.

So far, so good!!

PS: Just did the Vodacom speed test and got these results:

Download Speed: 1682 kbps (210.3 KB/sec transfer rate)
Upload Speed: 291 kbps (36.4 KB/sec transfer rate)

:D:D:D

Got your PM, tx! (and welcome!)

Looks like you answered your own question. As you see you are getting (pretty good) HSDPA speeds.

The speed reported on your PC when you connect is actually cosmetic, i.e. it's just a displayed string (you can edit it in the modem settings) and does not reflect the actual speed. So ignore it.

The icon on your phone is a better indicator. The switching between '3G' and 'HSDPA' is normal. Your phone will idle in 3G, but as soon as you rev it up by starting a transfer it'll switch into HSDPA.

Final test is always the speed test. Can't be fooled!

Thanks for the info, v3g ... and also for responding to my PM! :)

I guess I'll have to go the data card route, eh? ;)

My EDGE icon does indeed come on with a blue E when I am connected. I got 50 download and 25 upload so it was right smack dab in the GPRS part of the spedometer :(

Well EDGE starts at GPRS speeds, so it looks like the number of timeslots might be limited. And / or the modulation scheme.

Have we not done at check at your place before? I recall you mailed me a GoogleMap placemark? Or was it someone else in your area....

PM me your full addy and contact details in any case.

AFAIK, if the modem script for the U700 isnt on the Mac, then you need to get it, and install it. Then choose that modem script when setting up the connection manually.

Try google'ing for it. If you get(or have the script), the rest is fairly easy.

Hi All
I also connect with a U700 cellphone, but get 36KB/s mostly, sometimes it hits HSDPA and really flies though. My area (Florida Park) has a whiteout on 3G reception.Would a high gain antenna from poynt do the trick? Is it worth the bucks?

I have been using my U700 as a modem for just over a month and I am pleasantly surprised at the performance! Must add that I am about 200m from the tower.

No disconnects, except during a thunderstorm, even though I often leave it running for up to 18 hours at a time.

Daytime speeds are sometimes a little down, but nothing as bad as what I had on iBurst.

:D

Late reply

Hi there, Sorry..yes i am in a 3g/Hsdpa area...

but i think the vodacom chap here has answered my question...

it must be a fake port speed that is being reported - even though my vodacom mobile connect says i am connecting on Vodacom GPRS...i must admit it seems pretty fast...

okay - whats the link for the speed test plz...
