I purchased a 3G modem to connect my notebook, bought a R389 pre paid voice bundle then converted ( or attempted to convert) it to Data immediately. These transactions were done via a different computer via ADSL. I got the message that I had insufficient airtime available to convert. I hadn't even connected the 3g modem to the notebook but somehow I had used R4 worth of airtime!
I contacted Vodacom and was told that there is a R4 connection fee. For what, I asked. I hadn't even plugged the modem in yet! After a lot of to and for correspondenve I get the message that this is a business unit rule and cannot be amended!
If Vodacom are charging R4.00 on every data top up then I can just imagine the amount they are ripping us consumers off.

I also have never heard of this. Everytime I bought a bundle on my prepaid sim, I would recharge with the exact amount and convert it using ADSL...and there was no probs.

I haven't done it in a while, but that's exactly what I did too.

Money cannot be taken from you unless an internet connection is established. What does happen but especially on handsets is that the system reserves money for an internet conection and adds it back after the connection is completed.

As an example , you may have money on your cell phone and make an internet connection, you then make a call with out terminating the internet connection.Vodacom then reserves the R4 because of the connection. The call that you then try to make is not successful because you now have no money in the account even though it shows R4.

Maybe you should send me the number so i can see what really happened.
