I've had an Iburst connection since before they properly launched. I loved it in the beginning, before the cap was imposed. After the 3GB cap I just got used to download virtually nothing except a few anime shows when the new episodees were released.

Recently however I have found some local torrent sites and the last two months I've finished off my cap very very quickly. And speeds after cap suck, and I can't download and use MSN at the same time and I'm always on MSN so this is a problem.

So when I saw that from August Telkom will be reducing the ADSL prices some more, decided to have a look at the prices. And looks like I can get a lot more local at higher speeds if I'm reading it correctly.

At the moment I pay R599 a month for IBurst 3G. My plan is to cancel this service, and sell my IBurst modem so I can get an ADSL modem/router without paying too much more.

Then move to a 384K line from Telkom (to start, will move to 512k depending) and get an account with either Openweb or Webafrica.

Most likely the 192-IS-3GB Openweb account which is only R269 pm. So then the total per month will be R245 (line rental) + R269 (ISP) which is only R514. Less than I currently pay with Iburst :) And hopefuly better.

Just got a few questions about this: Have I missed anything? Or does the plan I outlined above seem to be good?

On the Openweb website it says: 3GB Cap, Surf after cap up to 30GB, Openbrowse International after cap 192k.

Now does this mean I start with a 3GB Cap that both local and international count towards (or only int?), and then after I'm capped. For local my speed remains at 384k up until 30GB, but I still can browse international at 192k. And once I reach 30GB then my connection is cut off. Oh, and would it be 3GB, and then 30GB. Or is it only 30GB in total, so 3GB before cap, and 27GB after?

Also, the R245 pm for line rental (after August 1st), is that R245 extra above normal line rental? Or do you just pay R245 for line rental end of story.

I'd like to budget for a ADSL modem as well. How much would a mid-range one cost? Or even a ADSL Router with say 4 ethernet ports and/or wireless.

Help much appreciated!!

Both local and international applies to your original cap, unfortunately. 27GB local after your 3GB international.

Openbrowse is a bit dodgy. It's supposed to be 192k, but it isn't always that fast. And MSN messenger gives a slot of **** with it. Local speeds are as good as ever, though.

Not too sure, but you get a free one from Telscum if you sign a 24 month contract for the line.

Indeed, openbrowse has not been the best so far but MrBeep reckons problems have been fixed and it should be better from now on...MSNmessenger never worked for me. And firewalls dont like it either...

As for modem...I got mine from lightedge technology here in CT. Was R700. Four port modem/router from SMC. Havent had one problem with it. There are cheaper ones out there though, if you look around...Not worth signing a contract with telkom for, anyway!

Alright, sucks that both local and international apply to that original 3GB :( So basically only slow international for me. Oh well.

Well I don't really mind the speed it will be going, as long as I can browse international sites. MSN working is a major thing though. How is it with other messengers like QQ, Skype, Yahoo, Google Talk?

Don't want any type of contract, so nothing from Telkom for me ;)

For me, jabber worked as a messenger client, which can use msn, yahoo and a few others. But the interface leaves a lot to be desired...

You can always get a webafrica topup account just to use for browsing. That is what i do.

Hmm.. well good to know that problems are being fixed all the time with Openbrowse. R700 isn't a bad price I think, don't wanna get something cheap that'll die after a few months.

Does jabber or any other multi IM clients have webcam support? Since I use that a few times a month as well.

Do those webafrica topup accounts only work from browsing? Or will it allow MSN to work as usual?

No webcam support that i know of, but this might be an option u can download a plugin for or some such....

The webafrica accounts: Sorry, i meant just use them for browsing. You can use them for whatever you want, and msn works perfectly. I am on one of them right now. Speeds always fast, and always online :)

You get a Free modem on a 24 month contract you have a choice of Ethernet or USB It is the 'ADSL Bundle' that you have to apply for in order to get the modem without paying which is about R999.00 without 24 month contract

That's cool, how much do those top up accounts from webafrica go for? Can I just find information about them on the Webafrica website?

Well found a nice wifi Router with ADSL built-in for only about R800, so that's perfectly fine with me. No contracts.

No - you pay your line rental twice - once for voiceline and once for dsl. Telkom sucks you dry. And an installation fee - taking it you can get dsl in the first place - and telkom get around to it in the next 6 months or so. The sentiment on this forum is: never sign a telkom contract.

R75 a GB isn't bad. Would I be able to use say an Openweb account for local downloading, and then if I really needed international, disconnect that Openweb account, and connect to a Webafrica top-up. And switch between them like that if needs be?

I don't know the prices. So say now I pay X for my normal analogue line. Then if I want to get ADSL, will I pay X twice, and then still R245, or just X and R245? If that made any sense.

.

Yes. OR try ant1body's rountesentry app to route your local traffic through one account and international through another...

Hmm.. after talking to a friend about it. 2x 2GB accounts from openweb seem like a much better idea. Might go for that rather.

I have a solution for all your MSN problems: DON'T USE MSN!!! :D

I am using Skype, ICQ and MSN (forced to!), and have to say that MSN is BY VERY FAR the worst! I just don't get it why the people use it, given there is skype and even not-so-good ICQ is far better than MSN ...

I like MSN.. Emoticons, winks, good webcam support.. oh and all the people who don't know much about computers always use it... I have lots of girl-friends I talk to on MSN.

So don't particularly wanna stop using it.

But it isn't important for me to use it all the time ;)

im very happy with my 192k line except for when telkom had a network fault (whats new ? )

I have an idea for saving that precious 2gig int that comes with your 28 gig local :

Ant1body has writen a program called DD-proxy...

http://mybroadband.co.za/vb/showthread.php?t=38715&highlight=proxy
http://antibody.za.net/extras/ddproxy.php

It directs international traffic via 1 account/isp/proxy and local through another account/isp/proxy, on 1 adsl line... I believe that it is made for proxies ( openbrowse ). Maybee MrBeep could supply us with 2 logins, 1 for the 2 gig int and another for the 28 gig local...?

This would save him money as if we dont finish the 2 gig int, he would have to pay telkom less...?

We would also not have to waste our precious 2 gig int on local downloads/email etc...

Could some1 please confirm this, ant1b0dy or MrBeep.. or some1 " in the know " as to wheather this idea (written by ant1b0dy ) would work..?

Thanks

I had seen that, looks like a good idea.

My plan was just to use one account from the start. Then when I need international I just connect with my second account. Do my MSN and email stuff on it. But ya then when the first account reaches 30GB. Will have to start on the 2nd. Might get a top-up account from web-africa then if I really need it.

Might be better though if there was a way to route it like that.
