Considering ADSL

Ok well found the number to phone them to install it a bit earlier.

Phoned them told them what I want and seemed to go smoothly, 6-8 weeks waiting period. As long as it's that or less, I'm happy :)

I ordered ADSL today via the 10219 number. When I phoned I said I wanted to do self-install. When I asked about this, the guy told me I still had to pay the installation fee even if I do self-install. The techy must still come out and "sync" my line with the exchange.

As far as I could figure out, by reading MyADSL. Self-install saves you that R404 and you can do everything yourself.

Can anyone tell me if this is true?

Also, are there any ADSL users here from Kimberley that could tell me how long their installation took?

In my other thread about the ISDN install, it took them a week, but this could be due to ISDN not being in such high demand?

Lastly the extras I must buy are the lightning protection and micro filter, correct? Micro filter R39, but he didn't give me a price on the lightning protection.

PS. I got the usual 6-8 week one. Oh and excuse me if these are stupid questions. Still a ADSL newbie in training. :o

Yeh, you're supposed to, Christiaan. They're either lying to you or they don't know their own policy.

There seems to be a kind of scam going on with self-install. It seems like Telkom doesn't really want to, yet they still offer it. But I suppose it could just be an unheard-of policy to most of their employees.

Thanks mooK!
I thought I smelled something fishy.

Will keep you guys posted on my extremely slow progress. Was a bad move to order it just before a long weekend. ;)

Well it'll be two weeks tomorrow, and hoping they contact me soon. Go back to varsity soon and then I won't be home too often and no one else who will be home is very PC literate.

Should I be using that number they gave me to check up on what the progress of my order is?

Same here, 2 weeks tomorrow since I ordered. Am I supposed to have gotten some kind of call by now?

What number can I call to bother them? :D

You can call 0800 456 786 to bug them about your application I believe.

Or if it's easier just ask at a Telkom shop. Never had much luck with those in the past though, other people seem to have.

Visited a Telkom shop today. I got a lame excuse that my order is at the cable guys. What's that suppose to mean?

The Telkom lady couldn't exactly explain what that means, but the good part I got atleast was a install date of 2-3 weeks. So here's hoping...

I agree, never take a ADSL contract. U can buy a good ADSL router/modem for R550 to R750+-. To get yourself tied to a telkom Contract for 24months or 36months is like putting a noose around your own neck. Giving Telkom the lever to execute at any time. Rather get a nice modem. and choose a ISP of your own choice.. Some have really nice offers.

I ordered my adsl line (192) on the 10th of January this year...only got connected last night (6-Jul-2006)...sadly the last three weeks have convinced me that the only satisfaction I'm going to get from all of this involves a visit to one of their call centres with a shotgun and chainsaw.

Time taken for telksum to install my adsl line (with existing telephone)
+/- 6 months...or
+/- 25 weeks...or
+/- 177 days...or
+/- 4248 hours...or
+/- 254880 minutes...or
+/- 15292800 seconds

Idiots spoken to: 99.9%
Number of times I was told a different story when speaking to a different consultant (asking the same question): 3/4 times

Its been 6 months for our 2nd. ADSL line... Sigh...

We decided to call and they told us our exchange wasn't upgraded but they have ports avalible O.o...
Then I asked them how it is able that we are connected with another ADSL line that also runs to that exchange and they put down...

Bastards.. GPRS ftw ^^
