Considering ADSL

Thanks for all the help everyone, think all my questions have been answered.

Just want to make sure I'm not missing anything with all the costs:

Once off costs will be the modem for R780, and the ADSL installation costing about R440.

And then the monthly costs are just the line rental of R245, and the ISP account which will be R171 times two.

Just a question about the installation. I'm assuming the normal installation cost doesn't cover installing an extension in another room does it? Since my phone line is in the center of my house, with my computers being in rooms around it, there aren't any other lines anywhere else in the house.

Could some1 please confirm this, ant1b0dy or MrBeep.. or some1 " in the know " as to wheather this idea (written by ant1b0dy ) would work..?

It's an IS thing afaik.

Azgard,

The point that i was trying to get to was to only buy 1 account from openweb... 2 gig int + 28 Gig local. And sumhow save the 2 gig international even though you've used 10 gigs local etc..

In theory, you would be able to use the "preserved" 2gig for msn, skype etc and then use the other 28 gig for local stuff....

This prevents the need for a topup account just to access international stuff..

I hope this makes sense... :)

Ya, know wat you meant.. That makes sense, and would be excellent..

Well I'd like two accounts anyway, since it will still come to less than IBurst, and 60GB is better than 30GB. But I might start with just one and see how it goes.

If you want 60 gigs then go for it..

I was under the empression that you only wanted about 30 gigs and because you needed international, you were going to purchase another account..

I'm still not sure wheather ddproxy can be used to "Preserve" the 2 gig international with openwebs : 2gig + 28 gig

I am pretty sure it does not. Has anyone managed to get this right? I dont think that is what the app was meant to do...But it would be awesome if it would :)

Any app that could do that would be awesome :)

Gotta just convince the person who days the bill now, that ADSL will in fact be cheaper..

I also don't think that "dd-proxy" can "preserve" the 2 gigz local but I really do hope that it can... Sum1 plzzzzzzz Confirm

Don't forget to add monthly analog line rental at ~R100. This is compulsory unfortunately.

Azgard good luck, I tried for about a year to concince my dad that our R500 internet bill would be reduced if we got adsl... He still didn't believe me coz he refused to look @ out telkom bills... What a noob !!!!!!!

Thanks Polygon, ya know about that. We already pay that for the normal line so don't have to worry about that.

My grandfather pays for my internet, and he's always been pretty open to new stuff. Had 56k, then got ISDN, then Iburst. Just he doesn't like contracts, still gotta try convince him just now.. lol

You dont need to sign a contract... Just buy a modem outright @ full price to avoid contracts... I think?

Yes, no need for contracts. Rent the line from telkom on a month-to-month basis and do the same with whatever isp you decide to go with...

When my ADSL was installed last week the techie said to me I'll have to pay extra if I want an extention. Did not ask him how much, but knowing telkom I'm sure it will be R100+ + +.

Got the ADSL modem now in the middle of my house where phone is with network cables to each computer. Works for me.

Iburst is so expensive.... Get ADSL

Aaah.. well you probably dont quite know what you are talking about and take things at face value.. or you just consider certain situations or only your needs. Dont feel like going into anything now...

But anyway, Iburst CAN be okay, or possibly better for you. So dont discard it because of a post like that.. or rather dont even believe a post like that, Iburst can work out cheaper if you only want certain things from it.

IBurst is good for mobility, and normal internet users. But I think I managed to download more per month with my old 56k modem, time to try out ADSL I think.
Iburst isn't so good for people who have to download a lot.

By extension I just meant to split the line so I could have an extension going to my room to connect the router to. But it is fine I've got all the connections and cables, can do it myself anyway ;)

Convinced my grandfather, was easier than I thought :)

What have people found to be the best way of getting it started? Visiting a Telkom shop? Phoning some number?
