OK, let me explain the situation. I have recently returned from a gap year and am now living with my parents. My father has been happily paying the account with me never having asked any questions. Recently I grew curious as to how much we were paying and what I found out shocked me...

We are paying R258.96 a month for 'DSL Faster Bundle' from tlkom, which is just the line rental.

We are also paying R399 a month for a 3gb data cap from M WEB..

And here comes the shocker: "WE" are paying our previous ISP R300 a month for a connection we havent used in 3 years......

Thats a total of R984.96 for a 3GB cap and, as far as I can tell, a 384kbps line. Am I wrong at thinking that is ridiculous?

Now, what do you guys suggest I do? Cancel the line and the data and change to another ISP as soon as possible? Our contracts are expired so we can change ASAP. which ISP do you suggest? I NEED more than 3GB data but am fine with 384kbps.. With the imminent price drops, I don't want to be hooked into a contract...

I really appreciate any advice as after this whole thing I am scared and confused ..

Thank You!

Sounds like you were paying both MWeb and Telkom for the ADSL line rental. This shouldn't be possible, surely one of them would have noticed? Perhaps you could query this and get a credit, as you were essentially double billed. Also, you were buying 2Gb (now 3Gb) from Telkom, and 3Gb from MWeb, your bad for not using all of it.

What was the other R300 for?

cancel your "previous" ISP account?

yes, i am definately doing that tomorrow morning! grrrr wat a waste

What was the other R300 for?

It was an ISDN account that we had before we got DSL.. so thats R300 x 36 or watever.... my god. O and since I might have that telkom data just sitting there (and i am currently capped..), how would i go about using the account? (im not a total noob, just have no idea about this)

Cancel everything.
Go here: http://www3.cybersmart.co.za/

Get a 384Kbit with a 4GB for R258 all inclusive.

Yes! that does look really good, seriously considering this.. Do you know if their service is good? and do you use the 'night rider' package?

Thank you to everyone for the advice, really appreciate it! ;)

I use cybersmart, and nightrider. I'm totally satisfied.

To use the telkom account you will need to input the correct username and password into your router.

hmmm.. do you know where i might find that information? always only used the mweb one.. should I phone telkom?

hmmm, unless someone has written it down, it would probably be easiest just to call them.

"easiest just to call (telkom)" :D
'easy' and 'dealing with telkom' just doesnt sound right.... but ja thanks for the help, i will call them tmrw.. serenity now..... :)

If you do not feel like phoning and live near some sort of "mall" just look out for the Telkom-Direct shop and pop in there.

Although not always completely clued up they are always very helpful.

Now you speaking to a real live person and not a machine

a Friend of mine had the same problem, he was paying mweb and Telkom for his usage and line rental. Both companies blamed the other one... he did not get a cent back although he canceled his account with mweb months ago...

I cant wait to get UK style ADSL. i paid 15 pounds for an uncapped 1mb/s line witch was allot faster than our 4mb/s lines. I remember downloading at about 390kb/s...UNCAPPED...that just shows how *** SA is with their ADSL.

I would love to use Cybersmart. It looks really awesome but then its the hassle of changing my email and sending it to everyone and changing it on all my online accounts. damnit should have stuck with Gmail on all of them.

Rule no. 1. Never use an ISP email account.
