Hey guys, this is disgraceful I know but I've been with TelkomInternet for the past 2 years about, the reasons why are not important but basically theres very few reasons not to just make the move to uncapped. Right now the package I'm on is the 4Mb line with 9GB international and 30GB local. The line is R413 and the package is ~R540.

Now I'm not the account holder and it's not up to me but I would like to convince them to jump ship because quite honestly the pricing is just ridiculous. The only things that I cannot complain about are line speed/stability. I haven't had a disconnect in years and get very good speeds for just about everything. I also went onto the Telkom site to confirm all the prices and such, and I was very shocked at how unprofessional their marketing was. The grammar is swak and there's very little concrete information. It also looks like they didn't proofread because on the 9GB package it states that you will be moved to local once you have "exceeded the 5GB cap". Hmmmmmm.

Anyways, the account holder has been using the email address [email protected] for a few years now, and doesn't want to lose the email address by changing ISP's. I'm trying to convince them to get the MWEB 4Mb standard uncapped for pretty much the same price overall. It's not like we're going to use it to download the internet, I'm not SUCH a heavy user and neither is anyone else who uses the line.

What you guys think? Is there any way to keep the old email address, or any ways to make the transition as painless as possible? Also any good arguments to convince them to change would be great.

I'm sure you could keep the @telkomsa email address for a nominal fee... I think.

I'd say go for it. Telkom internet is simply too expensive relative to competitors offerings. Like Marty said, there might be a way to get to hold onto your telkomsa.net account; ask both Telkom and Mweb what your migration options are. Obviously Mweb would be willing to jump through hoops to help you get it done coz it means a new customer for them...wouldn't expect too much of a courtesy from Telkom.

Think twice, do you really need an uncapped account? MWEB might be cheap, but you will only have usable connectivity 80 % of the time, (if that) - carefully review all the constant complaints on the forum regarding MWEB.

Your needs might be better served by a high capped account (far better throughput, stable and not the 384 download speed of MWEB) - You might want to investigate Afrihost, OpenWeb and FNBConnect; each with their own set of issues, however a far better alternative.

Should stable and constant throughput with the minimum of connectivity issues be essential, you might be well advised to stay with Telkom.

I realise that this might not be what you want to hear, but from my recent experience with local ISP's; Telkom is the best you can currently expect from any ISP.

Regards

Mike

An uncapped alternative might be - www.trltech.co.za - call them (don't be too bothered by their online offerings) and request a test account, so you can establish if it will be suitable.

Its not the same price overall... you'll be paying R413 for the 4meg line and R520 for the uncapped account. = R933.

who.is.michael has summed it up admirably.

The only things that I cannot complain about are line speed/stability. I haven't had a disconnect in years and get very good speeds for just about everything

If the above factors are important to you, you are probably better off staying with Telkom.

Look, it all really depends on what you're wanting to do with the internet. Personal, home use with a mom and dad who never download much, MWEB is fine. If you're looking to pull more than 300GB of downloads, then look elsewhere. If you want gaming, look elsewhere. If you want reliability, well thats touch and go, but for the most part you can be on the internet doing regular browsing pretty fine on MWEB. The Subscribers thread would suggest there are individuals that have a less than optimal solution, in which case you might consider looking at Openweb or something similar. Either way, TelkomInternet (Do bla bla) is a complete waste of money.

If the e-mail is vital, you can sign up for e-mail only and keep the address for 15.69 p/m. More information is here: http://www.telkom.co.za/products_services/email_solutions/cost.html

Hmm. Uncapped would be really nice, because I'm pretty sure I'll stay within the "fair usage" bracket, and while having 30GB local cap with good speeds is nice, there's only so much that you can get through local. Sometimes you just need that international cap. Even for things like linux software that isn't available on the local mirrors (I'm thinking the ArchLinux AUR here).

who.is.michael, you mention high-cap capped accounts. Do you know of any good deals specifically? Even ~50GB of international data would be good.

Also, does anyone have any experience with the Openweb uncapped lite? The 4Mb lite account is unshaped and going for R490 p/m. Let's say I have 50GB usage p/m, do you rate that would still fall below their "top 20%" cutoff point?

As for the speeds, it's a luxury. Paying for a 4Mb line and getting 384 speeds is out of the question though, that's just ridiculous. But if there was a slight speed drop (I usually get ~420KBps max out of my line) to like ~350KBps I wouldn't mind though.

EDIT: hambone, your reply seems to have come in while I was posting. Thanks for the heads up on the email address, that sounds perfectly reasonable.
Also, stricken, right now it's R413 for the line and ~R540 for the package. I fail to see how that isn't close to R413 for the line and R520 for the uncapped from mweb?

Hi AnthIste

I unfortunately haven't kept track with all the recent changes, however these I am aware of:

http://www.afrihost.com/site/product/adsl_capped - R 475 / 50 GB

https://www.fnbconnect.co.za/adsl_pricing.shtml - R 619 / 50 GB

http://www.openweb.co.za/per_gb/ - R 799 / 30 GB

https://www.trltech.co.za/whmcs/cart.php?gid=10 - I know they will make up a package that will suit you and don't advertise the best packages, however you are required to call them.

Dude you say 540 for the package, i would have thought the package would be bandwidth and line.

Mweb is awesome, i love it. Some people have issues other people it works as they say.

Hi killadoob

Thank you for your support.

I found Mweb highly restrictive in several ways. They seem to have carved up the internet into compartments, like browsing, one-click-download sites (Rapidshare type), Games, Torrents etc. Then they've put quite severe limits on when and how you can use them. It's anything but freeing the web. The shaping is very noticeable most of the time. They don't stick to business hours, and even public holidays can be very very slow. Their backbone is very unreliable and has been up and down far more often than it should. MWEB mail is an absolute disaster, so don't even consider that. Support responds quickly, but the reply is a standard one, and very little is achieved in the short or long term. MWEB is aggravation on a stick! They make a helluva lot of promises, but little changes and they seem to want to string customers along.

I've been vey disappointed at their almost constant inability to answer straight questions on the forum. That is always a warning sign that the company enjoys manipulating opinion.

I can't recommend it now.

There are better uncapped services out there, it just depends on price.

Perfect summary.

thanks for the replies guys, I'm only getting back to this now because I wrote my final exam this morning and I was studying. Anyways, it seems it's a bit of a coin toss when it comes to MWEB, people either seem to love it or think it's not worth the money. Seeing as none of the options work on a contract, it might be possible to get a few possibilities and if the one gives too much hassle just try the next. OpenWeb Lite sounds good to me though, I just hope I'm not overestimating what their cuttoff point is. If I do end up changing I'll post results here

Atm I would say if you are a heavy downloader or into gaming, MWeb is not for you. Its the 26th now and they have not been able to resolve the WoW issues and we only get full line speed from 1AM - 8AM so its pretty much turned into a ball of unusable snot atm.... Oct was fantastic tho but now its time to move

Edit: also they tend to always be doing "network upgrades" over weekends which we never get to enjoy as its always a new thing every week, I cant actually count the number of days we have been totally offline since its launch with all my fingers and toes theres just been so many!

This MWEB account is getting worse day per day

I have no problem recommending MWeb at the moment. Been with them for about 2 months and they have been great. The support after business hours can be shocking. Waiting on the phone for 20min for someone to answer. Downloads seem great and can usually get about 500KB/s using IDM from hotfile. If you plan to play WOW, I would recommend a tunnelling service such as battle ping to keep your latency low and stable. I usually get about 270ms ping on WOW using battle ping and it is constant.
Whatever you choose, at least you are not bound to any contract so if one doesn't work, go to the next. Check if Afrihost still has their free 1GB account to give that a go. You might lime them.
For me in the meantime...MWeb FTW!!!
