im kinda in the market for a new gaming machine, there are a few problems tho. i love going to lan's and owning every one and i love to play computer, but i've into the problem whether or not to upgrade my computer or get a console, i have a ps2 and i love playing 3rd person games like gta, I was wondering whether its more viable get a console than an upgrade. i've heard that there's rumours that pc gaming is being phased out.
and is there any news on the prices of the playstation 3,

there was a post here a while back, for PS3 going at R8500 +- i think. But they do cost around $1300 +- So average on around R10,000 +-

Sorry whaaaaaaaat ? $1300?? What are you smoking man? Playstation 3 retails at $600 (60 gig), direct conversion equaling R4290. So we could expect the PS3 when it launches in SA in March to be somewhere around there. I suspect you are getting that value from the ppl who are auctioning off there PS3's for hugely inflated prices. Pls get your facts right before you post tho

Yes but he is talking about the fact that if you want one right away you will have to pay the average ebay price, which is currently around the $1300 mark.

After getting my 360 the other day (ok - yesterday) my vote is for the unequivocally for the console.

Really?

I'm thinking in the same line as scotty777... I don't want to spend the huge sums on upgrading my pc over the next few years... Really considering a 360..
Do you/did you, play on your pc a lot? Just curious on what you guys think, is playing games like COD etc. alright on the xbox? I mean, being used to play with a mouse and all?

Also, what do you guys think the 360's lifespan will be?

I was really undecided on whether to get a xbox or upgrade my pc, untill i saw
that the new command and conquer will launch on the 360 first, it also apparently has a nice controll system. We will have to wait and see though...

And, one last thing... Apparantely there is a special at incredible corruption, buy the premium console and get a free game, does anybody know untill when this will be running?

Ok,ok, one very last thing, I saw Gavins thread about the platinum games, those are what i'm bargaining on, does anybody know if they will reach our shores and what pricing we can expect? I want PGR3...

Ok,ok, just one more thing... Will GOW keep me tied down for a week or two, or should I try and buy another game with the console, keep in mind, I'm a student short on cash, so if yes, which cheap game should I get?

Ok, thanks guys, I eagerly(sp?) await your insightfull responses ;)

Afaik they are already busy developing the next "xbox"

I think bwana mentioned yesterday he got his console at incredible with the free game.

Theres already a few cheap games out dont know enough about the platinum games but kameo is on sale for R240+- also call of duty 2 and tiger woods 2006 golf.

Yes really :)

I played on the pc when I had the time - COD/COD2 are two of my all time favourites on the PC so COD3 was one of the first games I got for the 360 and its good, really good. Using the controller was odd at first but it works. Pulling a trigger is nice. :D

I took advantage of that special from what I read over the guy's shoulder it was going to last a while longer - early December I think. The other guys in the store didnt even know about it, in fact the first guy I spoke to tried to tell me there were no specials apart from bundles with crap I didnt want like a screen for the car or a mp3 boom box. For my free game I choose GOW.

I got COD3, GOW, and Fear - havent tried Fear yet - my missus decided it was to be a xmas gift from my daughter so she's hidden it away.

If you can have both, that way you don't ever have to wonder what you're missing out on.
Positives and negatives for both platforms as far as titles.

Right now there's no Crysis planned for console and that's a big negative.
But there'll never ever be PGR3, DOA or the like for PC, ever! :(

So get both that way, you get the best of all worlds not Sony :D

i've now discovered that the ps3 will be able to run linux!!! and thats not all, it supports a usb keyboard/mouse and in unreall tournament 2007 you can play the game like a pc.

Now with that in mind you can upgrade harddrive (like the xbox360) and the 60gig ps3 you get memory card slots, and for those with psp's(like me) you can use them as remotes and the ps3 can send whats happening on the ps3's screen/tv.

did i mention that ps3 supports linux?! well its true, even in the menu of the ps3's screen it show if you wanna use an operating system that means you can use the ps3 as a pc as well as a game console.

mow i did some research and i discovered that wikipedia has got every thing you guys want to know about the ps3's support with linux.

Now i don't knoiw about you but this is a very clever move by sony.

Oh as for those who like to have lans th xbox has a 10megabit/s network port while the ps3 has a one gigabit/s network port. To me this is looking extremly good for the ps3.

Oh the ps3 has 8 cpu's while the xbox has 3, they both are 3.2ghz tho.
to me that ps3 seems to be quite a monster but this is my thought and im still looking into whether i should upgrade my pc or for the same price get ps3

I would get excited if it could run Windows XP. Saying that its able to run Linux is saying like its able to run DOS wrt compatibility.

The XBox has a 100 Mbs network port.

Here's a fairly decent comparison spec wise http://www.winsupersite.com/showcase/xbox360_vs_ps3.asp

Sorry if running linux on a games console doesn't get me all that excited. That's what the pc my 360 is replacing is for ;)

Cool comparison chart, is the Wii actually considered 'next-gen' with features that compare so poorly to the Xbox & PS3?

My support for P.C gaming has wavered lately with all the problems associated with it. But while looking into the Xbox360 and for the most part being impressed I was horrified:eek: to spot "page tearing:sick: " in a video review of SCDA. I investigated further and found that a lot of Xbox360 games have that problem.

Now there are very few things in gaming that irritate:mad: me more and as long as the Xbox games have it I won't even begin to consider buying one.

What are your experiances and do you guys have any info.

*I hope my P.C forgives me for my flirtation with the darkside. *;)

Why? gaming is obviously out of the equation as the console does the gaming, so then what is wrong with Linux? Get yourself the new Ubuntu and that will look and function great.

Okay, now theres a big advantage to PS3. but im still never going to get a console, PC gaming is just my thing. Don't really like console, probably never will. I think alot of people are the same, they just do game on a PC, and I really, really doubt its going to be "phased out" as if anyone could do that anyway.

Will it run Ubuntu? So often you hear of things running Linux and when it comes down to the punch its just a bunch of propellorheads getting excited over seeing a console on the screen. Nothing a non-techy would really use.

oh my lord, you are living in a egg shell, dude linux has less buys then windows xp. it's got better features and comes with more, some linux are open source (which you don't even know what it is because you sit there f@#$ing around with windows) um sure its not as refined as xp and the only reason why i use windows is becuase it has the most support for gaming.

I am extremly ecited about the fact that ps3 has support on operating systems, unlike xbox360, face it with the ps3 you paying for future proofing. I mean look at the ps2, it came out in 2001 and its still making sales.

Honestly i would rather trust sony who know the ropes far better than mircosoft, i would spend r6000 on a console in full nowing it will last me 3 to 4 years and probibly more. AND the ps3 comes with blue-ray uints, the xbox360 just comes with dvd-rom's and then to make those people spend more you gonna need to get a HD-DVD uint, god only nows how much thos eare gonna cost!!!
