I use my cell phone as a tethering device. But also use it to surf the net, download e-mail's etc ( When not being used as a modem / tethering device ).

My phone is a Mobicel R1 or whatever. It only gets that H+ thingy at the top. HSPA+ or whatever. It always used to have that signal and dropped down to EDGE very rarely if I was in a different location.

However for the past 3 weeks or so this hond phone is dropping more to EDGE than anything else. Drops for a few seconds, or like a minute or two, then gets the H+ signal again.

Phone is fine. Could this be because the towers are congested? ( Same exact location where it always got H+ it's now dropping a lot to EDGE ).

Could it be because of this new roaming Vodacom crap?

I'm using Telkom Mobile internet ( No roaming, only Telkom ) <-- That option

Before it was fine when I used this data. Just recently it's been dropping to EDGE a lot.

Anyone know why perhaps?

Does the phone even have 4G? I've never heard of a mobicel phone before.

Hsdpa is 3g, so set it to 3g only if it does not have 4g.
I did this and last night it didn't drop to EDGE. Internet was such a pleasure. Thank you for this.

Phone was set on 2G/3G Auto. I set it to 3G only.

Maybe that's why the damn thing kept on changing. But whatever, let's see if it lasts. Thank you once again.

Wow a R1k phone that doesn't even have LTE support.
Haven't had a phone without LTE support since ~2014.
You'll have a lot better an experience with LTE if you're e.g. gaming as the connection is a lot more stable. Would probably make browsing a better experience as well.

LTE does help with gaming yeah, although sometimes the signal is a bit meh resulting in a crap ping, switching to 3G is then better, I suppose because its not as saturated as the LTE.

Ag ja I don't play games like CS:GO or Dota, mostly just my MMO and Elder Scrolls: Legends. With those games I can get away with 300ms ping.

Even for those games, the experience is a lot better, had that with GW2 as I was in a bad signal area due to how the building was designed. It's a noticeable difference on pretty much anything interactive.

The question there is probably cost in terms of a New device to handle it, I just find jt quite sad that not all phones have LTE, the price difference is probably so little that they only do it for market segmentation.

You should be good with that as 3g network has basically the same coverage as 2g. Glad it worked out.
