What's the number for new account sign-ups?
Well I don't know If you can call and Sign up. it's better sign up the application and keeping one for your personal Records, you can go in person to WBS, if you'd like to sign up.

Ok, dumb question from a new Iburster:
How do you know which base station you're connecting to?

Not a dumb question at all. Actually I believe the only way to know for sure is to ask the helpdesk. But when I once asked the helpdesk I got the worng answer.

It would be a huge boon if there was a simple way to know for sure. For some, it is pretty obvious. But for others like me, you could theoretically be connected to any of 6 different BS's.

Slimothy that is an extremely good point :/
/end sarcasm

mlungu1 next time you call the help desk ask them to give you the list of basestations that you have been connecting to.

Ok, have done that. The nice part is that the names of the Towers are not reflected on the website under the network status page. There it gives you the area, not the tower name. When you ask "ok, which area is that on your website" you get "I dunno"..............Nice dealing with qualified staff
tks for the answers

What Tower ?

You can phone help desk and ask them to check which tower you connect to they can also tell you how much you download from which tower and the times that you download. the information is all there at their finger tips if they know how to access it ...!

If you have an 011 fax# for WBS (i.e. something other than the 0861#) please post it in the FAQ thread, thanks.

Since my post from this am has gone the way of the host, I shall repost...

Early this am both of WBS' DNS servers appeared to be down
  • 196.30.31.193 (ns-cache-01.jhb.wbs.co.za)
  • 196.46.70.1 (ns-cache-01.cpt.wbs.co.za)
I kept getting messages saying that the DNS server had "refused" to resolve hostnames to IP addresses...basically the same ol same ol %^$&.

So, can anyone recommend somewhat more reliabe local upstream DNS servers...?

Name: wbs.co.za
Served by:
- ns-01.jhb.wbs.co.za : 196.30.31.200
- ns-02.jhb.wbs.co.za : 196.30.31.201

I often use the following with nslookup:
apollo.is.co.za : 196.4.160.2
sangoma.saix.net : 196.25.1.9

I am considering revamping the FAQs, perhaps separating FAQs into General and Technical, i.e. separate threads to reflect the focus of the two iBurst forums...

What does everyone else this about this, and what else should be included in the FAQs...?

It is a good time to tidy up - if you have the time and inclination. I suggest keeping one FAQ thread with a link to/from the other sub-forum. Good DMS design - one thing, one place, once....

For anyone that's really bored & waiting for their PC to finish doing stuff @ 03:50 am, you could read some of the stuff WBS have slapped together here:

http://helpdesk.wbs.co.za/cfusion/wbs/crm/faq.cfm

It has some real pearls like:
3G is the mobile data service for the next generation of mobile phone network. Whereas 3G primarily builds on a voice platform, iBurst is an optimised data platform designed as an end to end ip network. Due to the extremely high spectral efficiency of iBurst, it can be offered in a cost effective fashion.
There is also a whole load of rambling about MTU - sadly I was not sufficiently bored to read any of it - I am still protesting the use of Macromedia Flash on that site...:(

Please could someone from WBS post the new job titles - we know Shaun Green is no longer the National Operations Manager, what new title does he have? - besides tea lady that was suggested a long time ago by one of the forumites...

Is Dylan still the Helpdesk Manager?
