Consumers Accepting Quotas

Did any of you read The Star article yesterday about the shortage of power in Brazil a few years back?

The implemented a quota system - but added a rewards program too. If one didn't reach their quota they could sell the remainder for cash ...

Well, with the quotas they are bandying around, that aint gonna happen.

Brazil does not have some of the cheapest coal in the world, around 85% of their power is derived from hydro. The shortages were as a direct result of a serious drought so the government claimed at the time. Many experts predicted the shortages 10 years in advance and were critical of the governments dependance on hydro for power.

Fines were as high as 300% reading some articles. I can see the profiteering already, no crystal ball required.
Why emerging markets will always be emerging markets, poor planning.
China crank out coal power stations at a rate of 1 per week.

Reminds myself of Age of Empires :D

But maybe we should get a team of Chinese in here and have them build a couple of power stations? :D

Four weeks should be enough for four new plants :D

(but I really know that it takes ages to get a plant up and running :o)

Why is power "more stable" today - when they got their quota system sort-of-approved?

Was all this month an excuse to push it through?
"Eish - we could not get 18.7%, so lets find another way to get more money"

Also read somewhere that economic growth in Brazil shrank to under 2% for that period and Brazilians were so pissed that the government of the day were toast in the very next elections

Quite amusing you think that anyone would even consider it possible :D

The point is not the number, or the net result of how many are commissioned and how often, the point is that their was some rudimentary foresight to deliver the power to feed their rapidly growing economy.

Sadly, the latter wont happen here, while the former is a very real possibility.

Well, not one forumite has yet said they agree to the quotas.
And we do have a diverse group here.

I wonder if ekskommel bothered to leave their boardroom to conduct this survey?

Brainwashing .... like the Radio stations do to make a song seem better than it is. A case example : Freshly Ground, Mandoza etc etc.. (Sorry to say, if you liked it, the Radio stations won their battle to convince you **** was gold.)

Repeat a sentence enough times and in the end you will believe it. Media manipulation and propaganda.

Orwell. 1984. Animal farm.

nuff zed...

Ok - chew on this.

The quota seems to be an average usage per month less some magical percentage.
So, let us say over the last 3 months you AVERAGE 1000Kw per month.
They take 10% off of that, and say "Here YOU can use 900Kw"

Now, here is the rub.

Those of us who are frugal and have already being "towing the line" by using less, are going to be unfairly prejudiced.
We do not have a geyser we can now turn off - it is already being turned off.
We do not have lights we can turn off when not in use - we already have them off.
We already boil the kettle with just enough water for one cup of tea.
We have already switched to energy efficient lights.
We already hibernate our PCs at night (I never used to - I have even posted on this forum that I never would "stoop that low" - but I have for the last week or so).

So - please, tell me - just how on earth am I going to economise now?
My neighbour will have no problem - he does none of the above, and has plenty of room to move.

They can go suck balls.

I'm NOT going to cut down more because I can't - and if they try their capping **** with myself, then I'm gonna sic the HSRC, public protector AND a lawyer on them, and see how they like that.

That is exactly the problem - the "good guys" again get the short end of the stick.
I am utterly beyond caring for this "nation" anymore - nothing I do is ever good enough, and, even when I try do the right thing, I get "sausaged" in the gat.

It is not likely to be a "cap" though.

What will happen is the first 900 (as per my example) will be at 55c a unit, and the rest that you use that month will be at R2.50 a unit. (examples sucked from my thumb)

Exactly.

And how will that help demand exceeding supply during peak periods, anyway?

It doesnt... its retro-active and a financial penalty if exceeded. Its the same as hanging a fat steak in front of your dog and then beating it up 'cos it took a bite.

Oh - it wont. Even if every consumer switches off his geyser when he goes to work, the difference is negligible. Might buy us 6 months.

And, in order to meet the quota, people will economise at home when they are there, which is outside peak hours anyway (as you rightly said).

This is nothing more than a ploy to get from the 14% they were given to the 18.7% they wanted.

And it is a FU to each and every person like me who has been economising down to the bone for the last 2-3 months.
