Consumers now in control with MNP

Just spoke to MTN. We have a contract with about a year and a half left to go.

Inquired about how much it would cost to "buy out" the remainder of our contract if we want to switch network. Was expecting to pay the monthly Service Fee, but was a bit suprised that on top of this they also wanted to charge me an amount for the phone?

Perhaps the Advertising Authority should look again at how Free a Free handset really is?

Will wait for a breakdown of the costs via email to see if I'm also paying for "services" like Caller Line Identity, and Itemised Billing, even though I would not be using these any more.

As the article says, it tips the balance slightly in favour of the customer, but it will only be any benefit if users pressurise service providers. I for one have started trhis process, but I don't expect speedy resolution.

Historically, the networks have always penalised loyalty. One hopes that this chicken may come home to roost, but I'm still not holding my breath!

I received a sms from Vodacom yesterday (on my cell no. that I intend to port):

Dear Vodago Smartstep customer: Your call rates to other cellphones & Telkom have been reduced to R2.35 for the 1st minute and R1.55 for every minute thereafter.

I don't know if that was inspired by the MNP... but anyway it's too little too late
