Howdy

I need to replace 2 of the tyres on my '99 model A6 2.4 front wheel drive.
I currently have 4 Michelins of which 2 have to be replaced.

I have gotten qoutes for Pirelli at R885 per tyre fully fitted and Continental for 878 fully fitted, size 205 55 16.

What would you guys recommend?

I plan to on Saturday replace 2 of the Michelins, move the 2 that have some tread left to the rear and put 2 new tyres in front.

If it's made from rubber, round, fits my rims, lasts long and is branded with a commonly-found name (Dunlop, Bridgestone, Michelin, etc), I'll buy the cheapest I find.

I would go with the Continentals, just because I like Continental and they are R7 cheaper.

I would stick with the Michellins if they lasted or if you had a decent run with them...
Otherwise Contis, Pirellis are soft compound they dont last that long...
I paid R1200 for 205/45/16 Contis:(

I would stick with Michelins. Conti's are hard, but last long. Pirellis are very soft. But I think Michelins are the best of both worlds IMO.

The best price I can get for Michelins so far is R1145, which i think is a bit expensive compared to the contis and pirellis available to me.

Depends which Contis.

The Sportcontact Conti are softer but don't last as long.

I changed my Contis sports on my mk5 2 months ago for Pirelli P-Zero Rosso's and I am stoked. The Pirellis are quieter and just generally feel better than the contis did when I got them. Lamborghinis come with Pirelli Rossos for a reason! Go Pirelli.

got another qoute for Michelins now for R1300, so clearly it seems like they are going to be way out of my range....

Anyone have any thoughts on Dunlop tyres? Can get the Dunlop 660 for R820.
Would you guys say a should rather go with the Conti or Pirelli for R60 more per tyre?

you guys saying pirelli's are soft?

sheesh I thought they were pretty long lasting compared to my bridgestones!

im happy with pirelli's but it seems the conti's are the way to go

Make sure they imported tyres and not the locally made.
The contis local are crap. 16" on Moms A-class lasted 20 000km.
Compared to my A3 2.0T, 17" contis lasted me 60 000kms (although i do a lot of highway driving, but still for a 147kw front wheel drive).
Even my wifes Getz (some korean or jap make) is lasting longer than the locally made contis.
I also balance, rotate and align often, which means i usually have to replace all 4.

lol, just to add another one to the equation, just found out that i can get Firestone ER300 for R790

I had Firestone's on my old citigolf and used to be very happy with them, but not sure how good there bigger tyres are?

I still think if your Michellins lasted ten years, just stick with them....
R600 extra for another 10 years piece of mind...

Whatever brand you get, keep the new tyres on the rear. FWD or RWD is immaterial - if you lose grip in front, the car understeers... no biggie. Lose grip at the rear & it's arse-first into the nearest hedge.

hehehe, i wish they had lasted 10 years.....
these were fitted by the previous owner, think that was about 40k km ago, reason i have to replace to is that they have worn unevenly (damn skipped 6 monthly wheel alignment check )

eish, was just thinking that due to most of the waring being in front if i put the older pair in front i'm going to have to replace them in 10/20k km's while if i put them at the back they will last quiete a bit longer.....

but now you have me wondering....

You can get away with it, as you do have a valid concern with wear, but I don't want to be on a wet road with slicks at the back! Your fronts wear faster because they do the majority of the work - I'd want them best equipped for the task at hand.
