Converting from Android to Blackberry

What would really be nice if they can make a battery which is the standard size, but which'll keep the phone running for a year without needing to charge...

Believe it or not we actually have the tech to do so and have for some time, the Voyager program is using them and still going strong. Nuclear batteries can last up to 20 years on a single charge but I do not think its a good idea to hand em out to the general public... well not yet anyway :)

Is this a problem with all Android phones or does the newer ones have better battery life ? I really dislike BB, but at the moment it seems like the only option.

Get a Nokia 5110, it'll last you a week.

My old BlackBerry 8900 used to last a day, and my friends BlackBerry torch lasts 8hrs max with heavy usage. I also have to charge my HTC Sensation every night. The faster / more power hungry phone, the shorter its battery life.

A 8520 will last for days, as it has a shoddy 320x240 screen, no GPS, no 3G and only class 10 EDGE.

In other words, you can read emails, use BBM and whatsapp and that's it. Nothing more.

Only problem with nuclear batteries (besides the obvious) is their size...

That's a lie! You can also ride the mbb wave bud!

You know I have done most power saving stuff mentioned here but its not right. Android is a beast and needs to be free. Turning off syncing and being aware of app refresh rates is all you need. You guys are neutering your phones to death. Might as well have blackberries. Let the android beast loose dammit!

+1

When i put on WiFi on my bb 9300 it dies quicker than my desire...

My desire lasts about a day with lots of mail, WhatsApp, some other apps, a few widgets. Ive tried quite a few roms and didn't notice a huge difference in battery life. What DID make a difference was doing a battery reset. Also it lasts forever if you just turn off data completely but then it may as well be a Nokia.

Also had to play around to get a decent battery life! Original SGS2 didn't last more than 6-8hrs..

Now I get two days, I found for me biggest saver was switching to 2G only, wifi always on, auto brightness. No power saving apps etc just froze a whole bunch of the stock apps! Flashed a custom rom with speedkernel

That's precisely it, you might as well get a Blackberry or iPhone. There's a reason their batteries last so long, they don't really do anything that drains power. Turning all the fun stuff off will make the battery last longer yes, but what's the point? Would you buy a Bentley Continental GT and just drive it really slowly and rip out all the luxuries to make it lighter, to try and get it to the same fuel efficiency as a Polo TDI?

That said, OP there must be something wrong with your phone...My RAZR is on 3G the whole day, syncing with 3 email accounts, one being the Exchange server at work, I use Tapatalk a lot, make some calls, and mess around a bit changing wallpapers, reading news, syncing files to and from Dropbox etc. quite often. When I go to sleep and plug it in at night (about 22:00) it's still got about 30% battery life left.

That said, it's only a month old an battery life does decrease as the phone gets older, my old X10 lasts about half a day when just lying there...

On a BB 8520? YES, that's all you can do, besides a stupid app or two if it works...

Tell me what else you can do with such a phone?

I are on it now replying to you. Sometimes the browser irks me but then I have opera as a backup. Its purpose built and executes well. I didn't buy a tata and expect amg merc performance.

Twitter, facebook, foursquare, radio streaming, dropbox, etc.

I dont see any of my advice as removing functionality?

Or maybe your idea of a free device is have everything and its mate run in the background looking more like a movie than an actual communication device.

since when is todays smartphone just a communication device?

Since Whatsapp, Skype, Phone, Sms, Facebook, Twitter, G+, Gtalk, Location, Instagram, and what not, is all forms of communication.

Sure you can take pics and listen to music on it as well, but I doubt thats what the people buy them for else they would go get Canon's, iPod's and so on. :p

Or did you miss the smartphone part?

Aaah then that explains why you dont care about the battery then?

In that case we not talking about people like you who buy "Phones" without SIM Cards ;)

They actually have devices for people like you:

Actually got my droid on contract. Bb later, more practical day to day. Data sorted

I guess you can say its the same as me using an Xperia Play for my games and a HTC Desire HD as my day to day phone.

Anyway, regardless of what you do with it or like to call it, I fail to see how it impacts on the freedom in relation to the advices I have given.

Dark themes, switching radios, limiting widgets to essential ones and screen brightness have no impact the freedom of the device esp when taken into relation to battery saving. Yes you don't have to apply all the measures but knowledge is key and if you know how to prolong the life of your device you can take the steps you are most comfortable with in reaching that goal.
